Here we mark the second workshop in our learning journey with schools in the central hills 💚

It is wonderful to see how children's faces light up when they find various species right in their schoolyard. We conducted a bioblitz, trained them to be storytellers building their confidence on public speaking.

Children's world is amazing. They just need an opportunity to explore and experience the outside world to grow.

🦎✨ This tiny lizard lives right in a schoolyard in Nuwara Eliya…

This marks the next step of our Schoolyard Scientists journey, taking curiosity from the classroom straight into the wild. 💫

From September 25–27, we went on our first field visit under the Rhino-Horned Lizard Conservation Project, funded by the The Rufford Foundation and finances hosted by Earthlanka.

We met 75 bright students and 5 teachers at Paynter Memorial School, talked about biodiversity and lizards in Sri Lanka, and introduced them to the project that begins right in their own schoolyard, where the Rhino-Horned Lizard (Ceratophora stoddartii) quietly lives among them.

In the coming year, we’ll explore the ecology of this wonderful species and share what we learn with neighbouring schools in Nuwara Eliya.

This is a journey where children learn to learn and connect with their everyday spaces. 💚

Stay tuned for our monthly updates. 🌿

Today, our Schoolyard Scientists at Homagama Mahinda Rajapakse College hosted “Nature’s Touch: Journey to the Schoolyard Wild.” 💚

The more we run these programs, the more we see just how deeply children light up when given the chance to truly connect with nature.

At the end of the program several children asked us “When are you coming back”. That question hit us hard.

It made us realize: we need to create more ways for them to stay connected. So yes, we’re dreaming up a Schoolyard Scientists Children’s Club; something lasting, something led by them and supported by us, something just for them (DM if you wanna join or support)

We believe that every child deserve to hear our story, learn that nature is not so far away and it's just one step away if they care to look.

Stay Tuned! 💚💚

Thank you National Geographic Society for all the support.

🌍✨ We’re thrilled to share that Schoolyard Scientists has been featured in the Field Notes Spotlight of National Geographic Society’s Explorer Connect – April 2025 Edition!

From schoolyards to sacred forests, from nature journaling to citizen science, we’ve been building empathy, curiosity, and conservation leadership with children and educators across Sri Lanka. 💚📚🦋

Huge thanks to National Geographic Society for spotlighting our journey. This is just the beginning. 🌱

On this Earth Day, Eshadi Mendis‘s message: Take time to appreciate nature. 💚

We understand that there’s a crisis, but do we feel it? Ask yourself how much do you feel connected to planet Earth?
