St. Xavier’s College OBA Empowers Future Clergy with Legacy of Service and Advocacy
KANDY — In a landmark engagement aimed at bridging the gap between educational heritage and future pastoral leadership, a high-profile delegation from the St. Xavier’s College Old Boys’ Association (SXCOBA) visited the National Seminary in Ampitiya last week.
The visit, organized at the special invitation of the Director, Rev. Fr. Nerio Abraham, provided final-year seminarians with an in-depth look at the pivotal role alumni play in safeguarding the identity and infrastructure of Catholic educational institutions.
A Legacy of Resilience and Innovation
Mr. Vadivel Balendran, a member of the OBA’s Education Committee, led a comprehensive presentation detailing the association’s tireless work since 1997. He highlighted St. Xavier’s unique status as a bilingual institution dedicated to serving all ethnic and religious communities a tradition the OBA has fought to preserve.
The delegation showcased an impressive portfolio of recent achievements, including:
The St. Xavier’s College OBA has balanced technological innovation with heritage by establishing Sri Lanka’s first school AI Club and donating 12 computers. They successfully revived cricket, football, and inter-house meets, while funding main block renovations and student welfare. Beyond physical aid, the OBA acts as a vigilant watchdog, advocating for administrative integrity and historical governance standards.
Addressing Historical Challenges
The visit culminated in a poignant panel discussion regarding the 1960 state takeover of schools. Panelists explored the subsequent decline of the education system and the urgent need for reform.
Past President Mr. R.M. Nawaz made a stirring call for the Church to exercise its proprietary rights more vigorously. Citing Act No. 5 of 1960 and Act No. 8 of 1961, he emphasized that the Church remains the legal proprietor and must be deeply involved in the college's management to ensure its spiritual and academic standards. He also shared his experience as a student, a good sport and an obedient student to the principal.
A Call to Action for Future Leaders
Joint Secretary Nilan de Zoysa stressed that the revival of St. Xavier’s is not just about nostalgia, but about the future of children in the Nuwara Eliya region. The seminarians were urged to carry this spirit of community mobilization into their future parishes. The delegation encouraged them to harness "young blood" and establish similar alumni or community associations to meet the evolving challenges of modern society.
The financial scale of the OBA's commitment was also made clear, with participants acknowledging an expenditure of over Rs. 6 million on college projects since October 2023 alone.
The SXCOBA expressed its gratitude to the delegation members—Messrs. Hiran Kodithuwakku, Vadivel Balendran, R.M. Nawaz, Nilan de Zoysa, Emmanuel, and John Christopher—for their successful representation of the college’s enduring legacy.
