PRESCHOOL NEW YEAR FESTIVAL
The YMCA Negombo Preschool’s annual New Year festival took place on April 11, 2026, at the YMCA premises. The event was attended by the YMCA preschool children, their parents, and many others who joined to witness the celebration.
The festival began with a warm welcome to the distinguished guests: Board of Directors Miss Ayomi Darshika, Mrs. Jesmin Shehani, Miss. Judi Imashi and Former preschool Teacher Mrs. Dinusha Fernando. After the traditional lighting of the oil lamp by the guests, the games and activities kicked off.
Several traditional games were organized for both the children and their parents, and all the kids participated actively in the activities. At the end of the event, winners and participants were presented with valuable gifts as recognition for their efforts.

NEWYEAR TRADITIONAL PROGRAMME
The month of April marks the start of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations. Many traditional events are carried out throughout the New Year season. The YMCA Negombo organized a New Year traditional program for preschool kids on 10 April, 2026 with the intention of teaching children about Sinhala and Tamil New Year traditional activities. During the event, teachers explained the children traditional activities carried out on Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival and children practically participated in the traditional activities. At the end of the activities, everyone enjoyed traditional meals prepared especially for the occasion.

CAMPING AND HIKING – CH2
The National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka successfully organized the second phase of the Camping & Hiking Programme (CH2) on 20th and 21st March 2026 in Kandy. A total of 28 enthusiastic youth representatives from 9 YMCAs participated in this exciting training, with YMCA Negombo proudly represented by 8 members.

On 20th March, participants gathered in Kandy and took part in an engaging training session on map reading and essential knot-tying techniques, guided by experienced resource persons. These hands-on sessions equipped participants with the practical skills necessary for safe and effective outdoor adventures.

On 21st March, participants put their learning into action through a practical hiking session to Kondagala Rock via the Loolkadura Tea Estate. The hike was designed to apply the knowledge gained from both CH1 and CH2 training programmes.
Participants were divided into three groups, with each team assigned specific tasks such as navigation, safety coordination, and teamwork challenges throughout the hike. This approach strengthened their leadership skills, team spirit, and problem-solving abilities in real-life situations.

The programme not only enhanced outdoor survival skills but also encouraged confidence building, environmental awareness, and responsible adventure practices among the youth.

TRAINING ON CHILD RIGHTS AND CHILDR FRIENDLY SPACES

On 14 March 2026, the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka (NCYSL) successfully conducted a training workshop on Child Rights and Child-Friendly Spaces at the YMCA Colombo Forum Hall.

Facilitated by Ms. Nishamani De Silva from Save the Children, the session equipped YMCA staff and volunteers with essential knowledge and practical skills to ensure the safety and well-being of children in all YMCA activities.

A total of 29 participants from 7 YMCAs across the Western, Southern, and Central regions took part in this valuable training. YMCA Negombo was proudly represented by 6 members (4 staff and 2 volunteers).

Through interactive discussions and real-life scenarios, participants gained insights into:
✔️ Understanding child rights
✔️ Preventing child abuse
✔️ Creating safe, child-friendly environments

CHILDREN PROGRAM AT ST. ANTHONY’S SCHOOL, MURUTHENA
As a continuation of its dedicated support to St. Anthony’s School, Muruthena, YMCA Negombo successfully conducted a children’s programme for both primary and secondary students on 08 March 2026 at the school premises, with the participation of 75 children.

The programme was organized with an initiative to support children’s well-being and bring back smiles after challenging times.
The day was filled with exciting games, songs, and creative origami sessions. The morning session was dedicated to primary students, while the afternoon session was enjoyed by the secondary students.

The highlight of the day was the vibrant campfire event, where children showcased their talents through dramas and dance performances. Nearly 150 participants, including parents and community members, gathered to witness this special moment.
The entire programme was organized and conducted by the dedicated youth club members of YMCA Negombo, making it a truly memorable day filled with fun, laughter, and togetherness.

REBUILDING FUTURE TOGETHER
Following the devastating impact of the Digha Cyclone, YMCA Negombo stepped forward with a series of community relief initiatives to respond to the most urgent needs of affected families.
Extending beyond immediate relief, YMCA Negombo continued its dedicated support to St. Anthony’s School, Muruthena. Severe flooding had damaged essential school furniture and facilities—including library book racks, tables, and whiteboards—significantly disrupting the students’ learning environment.
In response, YMCA Negombo joined hands with Yenlo Lanka (Pvt) Ltd to restore the school by providing new furniture and materials, helping to create a safe and functional learning space once again.

In addition, special programmes were conducted to support the mental well-being of the children.

🌟 CHILDREN’S VACATION CAMP 2026 🌟

YMCA Negombo successfully organized its first Vacation Camp for the year 2026 for the Children’s Club members from February 28 to March 1, 2026, at Youth Crops, Waikkala, with the enthusiastic participation of 34 young members.
The camp began with an educational excursion to a roof tile factory, where the children learned how roof tiles are manufactured and experienced the production process firsthand. It was a fun and interactive hands-on learning experience for everyone.
The afternoon was packed with exciting outdoor activities, including team-building exercises and fun games, helping the children develop their leadership and teamwork skills. One of the most exciting moments of the day was the Talent Show, where the participants confidently showcased their abilities in dancing, acting, and singing. The first day ended on a high note with a delicious BBQ dinner enjoyed by everyone. 🍢🔥
On the final day, the children participated in an adventurous Treasure Hunt filled with interactive challenges, followed by the lively Maha Kridawa, where everyone had a wonderful time. 🏃‍♂️🎉
At the end of the camp, awards were presented to the best-performing team and the best individual performer, celebrating the spirit, creativity, and enthusiasm of the participants. This camp provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn, collaborate, build friendships, and develop important life skills while having lots of fun together.

On February 26, 2026, our little ones at YMCA Negombo had a fun and educational Nutrition Program at their preschool!
The session began with the teachers warmly introducing each ingredient that would go into the soup, helping the children learn about healthy foods and their benefits. The excitement grew as the children eagerly joined their teachers in preparing a delicious chicken soup and toasting fresh bread — a wonderful hands-on learning experience!
The program concluded with everyone happily enjoying the homemade chicken soup along with toasted bread they helped to prepare. 🍲🍞✨

CELEBRATING INDEPENDENE DAY WITH OUR LITTLE STARS
YMCA Negombo preschool children joyfully celebrated the 78th Independence Day together with their teachers at the YMCA premises. The little ones proudly dressed up to represent the beautiful diversity of Sri Lanka’s ethnic groups, filling the day with color, culture, and smiles.
Throughout the week, they also created lovely handicrafts and took part in fun activities to learn the value of freedom and unity. It was truly a day full of happiness, creativity, and patriotic spirit!

Empowering Youth to Be Their Best!
The National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka (NCYSL) kicked off an exciting series of youth training programs for 2026 under the theme “Be Your Best, Live Your Best.”

🏊‍♂️ Water Safety & CPR Training (LS1)
Held at St. Michael’s Church Hall, Kollupitiya, 11 youth from Negombo YMCA gained essential life-saving skills and hands-on experience to respond confidently in emergencies.

📸 Y Media Training (Online Series)
Through four interactive Zoom sessions, 7 youth learned basic and mobile photography, visual storytelling, lighting techniques, and how to use media effectively for documentation and social media.
These valuable opportunities continue to build the skills, confidence, and leadership of our youth. A heartfelt thank you to NCYSL for guiding and supporting young people across local YMCAs!
