EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION: YOUTH ACTION TO PREVENT GBV

The YMCA of Negombo and YMCA of Pamunugama, in partnership with the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka, successfully conducted a two-session training program under the Youth Action to Prevent Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Project.

Held on 30 August and 5 September 2026, the program brought together 41 young people from the Sri Vimukthi Youth Group, SYU, Shramabhimani, and both local YMCAs.

Through interactive activities, group discussions, presentations, and the “GBV Tree” model, participants explored gender, s*x, the root causes of GBV, its impacts, and ways to build safer communities.

The impact was clear — participants’ overall knowledge increased from 50% to 78% through the pre- and post-evaluations.Participants who completed both sessions received certificates in recognition of their commitment.

Together, we are empowering young leaders to become agents of change and work towards a safer, more equal, and GBV-free future.

🍎🍌🍇 A FUN AND FRUITY LEARNING EXPERIENCE AT YMCA NEGOMBO PRESCHOOL 🍓🍍
On 11 September, our little learners at YMCA Negombo Preschool, together with their teachers, enjoyed a fun and educational Fruit Kebab Making Activity! 🍢🍉

Through this hands-on experience, the children had the opportunity to identify different types of fruits and observe how they look after their skins are peeled. They enthusiastically took part in preparing colourful and delicious fruit kebabs alongside their teachers.

The learning did not stop there! Our little ones also had the wonderful opportunity to taste the different fruits and discover the differences in their flavours—sweet, sour, and everything in between! 😋🍓🍊🍌

It was a joyful day filled with learning, exploration, creativity, teamwork, and delicious healthy treats! ❤️

🪁 FLY WITH Y – KITE FESTIVAL 2026 🪁

The annual “FLY WITH Y” Kite Festival 2026 was successfully held on 29 August 2026 at Palangathure Beach. The event was specially organized for the preschool children and Children’s Club members of YMCA Negombo.

A total of 42 participants registered for the festival, bringing along their colourful and creative kites. In preparation for the event, the children created a wonderful variety of kites, each showcasing their unique creativity and imagination. The preschool children received valuable support from their parents in preparing their kites, making the event a truly collaborative and memorable experience.

The competition was held under two categories, Preschool and Children. The judges selected the best three kites from each category, and the winners were awarded well-deserved prizes in recognition of their creativity and kite-flying skills.

It was truly a memorable day filled with creativity, excitement, togetherness, and colourful memories!

⚽ FRIENDLY FOOTBALL MATCH ⚽

A friendly football match was held between the YMCA Negombo Children’s Club and the children of the Kudapaduwa Children’s Society on 22 August 2026 at the Don Bosco Football Ground, Eththukala.

More than just a competition, the event was a celebration of friendship, teamwork, fun, and joy among the children. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to build relationships, develop their skills, and enjoy the true spirit of sports.

Through activities like these, YMCA Negombo continues its commitment to nurturing children’s skills, confidence, teamwork, and character through sports. ⚽🤝

A SPECIAL EVENING OF FUN AND ENTERTAINMENT 🕷️🎬

On 12 August 2026, the Children’s Club members of the YMCA Negombo enjoyed a fun outing to Aqua Lite 3D Cinema, where they watched Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

A total of 18 Children’s Club members joined this exciting evening, filled with laughter and entertainment. Watching the movie in 3D was a new and exciting experience for them, making the outing even more special and memorable. 🕷️🎬

Empowering the Next Generation: Negombo and Pamunugama YMCAs Unite for Gender Equality Camp

Forty-three children from the YMCA of Pamunugama and the YMCA of Negombo gathered for an engaging two-day training camp dedicated to challenging negative gender norms and stereotypes held on 25 and 26 July 2026.

Training was organized as part of the National Council of YMCAs of Sri Lanka (NCYSL) Project Youth Action to Prevent GBV, the camp provided a safe and welcoming space for children to explore new ideas about equality and mutual respect through hands-on learning.

The participants took part in a wide variety of activities, including simple discussions, creative storytelling, and collaborative tasks where boys and girls worked together seamlessly. From cooking meals side by side to playing sports and games, the children experienced firsthand the value of teamwork without division.

A highlight of the program was watching a portion of the inspiring movie Dangal, which led to thoughtful conversations about how both girls and boys can overcome societal pressures and achieve their goals.

The success of the entire event was largely driven by 15 dedicated youth leaders from both YMCAs who thoughtfully planned and facilitated every session, ensuring the themes were relatable and easy for the children to grasp.

By encouraging open dialogue from a young age, this collaborative camp helped plant the seeds for a more inclusive and understanding community.

🌟 Educational Exposure Visit to SPAR Supermarket – Negombo 🌟

On 17 July 2026, YMCA Negombo organized an educational exposure visit for our preschool children to SPAR Supermarket – Negombo Branch.

This special learning experience was designed to help children understand how a supermarket operates and how people select and purchase groceries in their daily lives.

During the visit, our little learners had the opportunity to explore different sections of the supermarket, identify various food items and household products, understand the importance of arranging and organizing goods, and experience the process of choosing and purchasing items in a safe and guided environment.

Through this practical learning activity, children were able to connect classroom lessons with real-life experiences, enhancing their social skills, confidence, observation skills, and practical understanding.

We sincerely thank the management and staff of SPAR Supermarket – Negombo Branch for warmly welcoming our children and supporting this valuable educational experience.
