Cultural Exchange Event between YMCA Negombo Youth Club and Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong Volunteers

The members of the YMCA Negombo Youth Club and the volunteers from the University & College YMCA Department of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong participated in a cultural exchange event organized to share and gain a better understanding of each other's cultural traditions and activities.
The event was held on 10 June 2026 at St. Stephen’s Church Hall with the participation of 35 members from both groups. The program commenced in a traditional manner with the lighting of the oil lamp, followed by a welcome dance performance by the children. The event continued with a Kala Netuma performance by the Youth Club members, followed by a musical performance by the Hong Kong volunteers and an instrumental performance by the YMCA youth.
The highlight of the event was the sharing of traditional foods by both groups, offering a unique opportunity for cultural appreciation and fellowship. The programme concluded with cherished memories, strengthened friendships, and a deeper understanding of each other’s cultures, making it a truly meaningful and memorable experience for all.

A JOYFUL DAY OF LEARNING, FRIENDSHIP AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE AT THILLANDUWA PRIMARY SCHOOL

On 8 June 2026, the University & College YMCA Department of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong conducted a service programme to Thillanduwa Primary School Children’s.

A total of 38 Children's, along with 12 university student volunteers and 2 group leaders, participated in this exciting programme. The activities included team-building exercises, interactive learning sessions of Hong Kong transportation system and a variety of fun games designed for the enjoyment and development of the children.

This programme provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to interact with the university students, fostering friendship, teamwork, and cultural exchange through play and learning.

Both the children and the university students greatly enjoyed the activities and shared many memorable moments together. It was a joyful and fun-filled day that will be cherished by all participants.

🤝 STRENTHNING GLOBAL FRIENDSHIP THROUGH YOUTH EXCHANGE 🌏

On 6 June 2026, the volunteer students of the University & College YMCA Department of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong and the youth members of YMCA Negombo came together for a one-day cultural exchange programme with the participation of 28 members.

The programme commenced with a warm welcome, during which the visiting university students were presented with commemorative postcards as a token of appreciation and friendship.

The morning session featured an insightful presentation on Sri Lanka, its rich culture, and significant landmarks, delivered by Ayomi. In return, the university students from Hong Kong – Jonson, Lilly, and Fred – presented an engaging overview of Hong Kong, highlighting its culture, traditions, and notable landmarks.
Participants then had the opportunity to interact and learn more about one another through a series of group activities, fostering friendship, understanding, and cultural exchange.

During the second session, participants were divided into groups and engaged in team-building activities and games designed to strengthen cooperation, communication, and friendship among the members.

The programme provided a valuable platform for youth from different backgrounds to connect, share experiences, and build lasting friendships through the spirit of YMCA.

SERVICE PROGRAMME WITH THE CHILDREN'S CLUB OF YMCA NEGOMBO BY THE UNIVERSITY & COLLEGE YMCA DEPARTMENT OF THE CHINESE YMCA OF HONG KONG

On 5 June 2026, a group from the University & College YMCA Department of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong conducted a service programme with the Children's Club of YMCA Negombo.

A total of 22 Children's Club members, along with 12 university student volunteers and 2 group leaders, participated in this exciting programme. The activities included team-building exercises, interactive learning sessions, and a variety of fun games designed for the enjoyment and development of the children.
This programme provided a wonderful opportunity for the children to interact with the university students, fostering friendship, teamwork, and cultural exchange through play and learning.

Both the children and the university students greatly enjoyed the activities and shared many memorable moments together. It was a joyful and fun-filled day that will be cherished by all participants.

UNIVERSITY & COLLEGE YMCA DEPARTMENT OF THE CHINESE YMCA OF HONG KONG – SERVICE TRIP 2026

A group of 12 university students volunteers and 2 leaders from the University & College YMCA Department of the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong visited YMCA Negombo from 5–12 June 2026 for a meaningful service trip.

The purpose of the visit was to engage in community service initiatives, construct playground facilities for children, participate in cultural exchange activities, and explore the city while fostering friendship and mutual understanding between the young people of Hong Kong and Sri Lanka.

VESAK CELEBRATION
To celebrate the Vesak festival, the preschoolers of Negombo YMCA, together with their teachers, beautifully decorated their preschool area with vibrant Vesak lanterns. As part of the day’s special activities, the children later organized a Dansala.

The event was held at the YMCA premises, where the children warmly served drinks to all visitors who stopped by during the celebration. It was a joyful and meaningful way to experience the spirit of Vesak through kindness, creativity, and community.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION

The YMCA Preschool in Negombo celebrated Mother’s Day in a truly heartwarming way! The event brought together our preschool children and their wonderful mothers for a special morning at the YMCA premises.
To begin the celebration, the mothers were warmly welcomed with a beautiful performance by their children. Our teachers then shared a heartfelt message, followed by a touching moment where each child presented their mother with a handmade flower and a special card.
One of the highlights of the day was the cake icing session, where mothers and children teamed up and enjoyed sweet moments together filled with love, laughter, and creativity.
It was a beautiful reminder of the special bond between a mother and child, and a heartfelt celebration of the amazing women who guide, nurture, and inspire us every day.

CELEBRATING INDEPENDENE DAY WITH OUR LITTLE STARS
YMCA Negombo preschool children joyfully celebrated the 78th Independence Day together with their teachers at the YMCA premises. The little ones proudly dressed up to represent the beautiful diversity of Sri Lanka’s ethnic groups, filling the day with color, culture, and smiles.
Throughout the week, they also created lovely handicrafts and took part in fun activities to learn the value of freedom and unity. It was truly a day full of happiness, creativity, and patriotic spirit!
