RCM International Women's Day Celebration
The Rotary Club of Moratuwa marked International Women’s Day with a meaningful Peace Building Project dedicated to honoring the invaluable contributions of the RCM Anns. This initiative not only celebrated the women who support and strengthen Rotary’s mission, but also aligned with the global spirit of the day recognizing women’s achievements, advocating for gender equality, and fostering inclusive societies.
International Women’s Day traces its origins to the early 20th century, emerging from labor movements in North America and Europe. It was formally proposed in 1910 by Clara Zetkin at the International Socialist Women’s Conference, with the aim of promoting equal rights for women, including the right to vote and work. Over time, it evolved into a worldwide celebration, and in 1975 it was officially recognized by the United Nations, further strengthening its role as a platform for advancing gender equality, empowerment, and social justice.
Today, International Women’s Day stands as a powerful reminder of both the progress made and the work still required to ensure equal opportunities for women everywhere.
In this context, the Rotary Club of Moratuwa made initiatives to build better relations and boost peace & harmoney that is absence of violence.
By recognizing the Anns as key stakeholders, the project emphasized their vital role in fostering harmony, unity, and continuity within the Rotary family. It acknowledged that behind every successful community effort, there are women whose dedication, emotional intelligence, and quiet leadership sustain meaningful change.
The event also highlighted the concept of positive peace
not merely the absence of conflict, but the presence of mutual respect, understanding, trust, and psychological wellbeing.
Through shared reflections, heartfelt appreciation, and collaborative engagement, the program created a space where women felt valued and empowered, reinforcing their sense of belonging within the Rotary movement.
Ultimately, this celebration went beyond a ceremonial observance. It became a reaffirmation of Rotary’s commitment to gender inclusivity, respect, and empowerment.
By honoring women on such a globally significant day, the Rotary Club of Moratuwa strengthened its vision of building resilient relationships and nurturing a peaceful, compassionate, and empowered community for all.
