Indian Member of Parliament and acclaimed author Dr. Shashi Tharoor attended the launch of the Colombo Literary Festival 2026 on 24th Friday, marking the opening of what organisers describe as Sri Lanka's first international trilingual literary festival.
The opening ceremony, held at Arcade Independence Square, was attended by Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, Colombo Mayor Vraรฎe Cally Balthazaar, Festival Director Pradeep Samaranayake, leading writers, publishers and members of the local literary community.
Running from July 24 to 29, the six-day festival celebrates literature in Sinhala, Tamil and English, bringing together local and international authors, poets, academics, critics, filmmakers, artists and readers on a common platform.
The festival programme features literary discussions, book launches, creative workshops, film screenings, cultural performances, musical events and book exhibitions. Activities will take place daily from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m at the Arcade Independence Square.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Jayatissa described the festival as a significant milestone in showcasing Sri Lanka's literary identity to the world. He said the trilingual platform would encourage readers of all ages to engage with literature across languages and cultures while fostering greater appreciation of the country's rich literary heritage.
Organised by Colombo Literary Festival in collaboration with five leading Sri Lankan publishing houses, the event aims to move beyond the traditional book fair model by giving equal prominence to Sinhala, Tamil and English literature while promoting Sri Lankan writing to an international audience.
The festival welcomes readers, students, writers, creators and literature enthusiasts of all ages, with the goal of creating an inclusive space for literary exchange, cultural dialogue and creative expression.
