Our Story
To Build up the Runakanda Conservation Center. Sri Lanka can be named as a country which is rich with Eco systems in the hand of Biodiversity. When describing further she can be nominated that she is a small country that we can see many Eco systems. Among those low land Rain forests acquire a higher place. In those forests there is a high Biodiversity. Up to now following lowland rainforests are there in Sri Lanka. ( Sinharaja rain forest, K.D.N rain forest, Yagirala rain forest, Kalugala rain forest & Gelemale rain forest) Among those Runakanda Reserve rainforest takes a place of high Biodiversity. Now it is a forest of 5500 hectares in extent. This rain forest is similar to the sinharaja forest with the same Biodiversity. The Runakanda conservation center was built with the hopes of conservation of this forest, to hold environmental workshops & environmental programmes, for staying visitors who come here for visiting & getting an environmental knowledge. Conducting awareness programmes about the Serpent Species of Sri Lanka. This for the Community & the School Children. Handing over a printed poster about Venomous Snake of Sri Lanka to the Community. Conducting Environmental Programmes & Research camps based at the Runakanda Conservation Center. We marked 3kilometers on the boundary of the western side of the Runakanda Rain forest with the help of the forest department. Starting the re- forestation in Runakanda where there is de- forestation. Here we grow species of trees which grow in lowland rainforest. We select low income villagers from this area and they are given the knowledge and the support to have nursery of plants. Which we mentioned above after three months we bye those saplings from them. Our main aim is to protect water resources as well as the areas where water springs are born an further, we also give our fullest trail to conserve the Biodiversity of the area. The following are the scientific names of the trees that we grow in deforested areas.
