We help communities by neutering, vaccinating & treating street animals—ending suffering, stopping rabies, and saving lives 🐕

The Dziko Project is a grassroots charity working to improve the lives of street dogs and cats in southern Sri Lanka. Every day, we care for abandoned, neglected, and vulnerable animals through sterilisations, vaccinations, parasite treatments, and emergency veterinary care. We also support families who love their pets but cannot afford the costs, helping them keep their animals healthy and safe.

Our mission is to break the cycle of unwanted litters, prevent the spread of deadly diseases, and create kinder, healthier communities for both animals and people. You can be part of the change — donate today: paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=69PFKSH9XS9QL

Blacky update 🐾

Today Rosie and Ramesh took our brave boy in for his pre-surgery blood test to confirm his tick fever medication has done its job and that he’s healthy enough for the next step in his journey, stage 3 of his rehabilitation, his leg amputation.

The good news? Over the past week our regular welfare checks have shown Blacky is full of energy and back to his happy, beautiful self.

We’ll have the blood results tomorrow. If all looks good, surgery will be scheduled for next week. Fingers crossed for you, Blacky! 🤞

In a world that feels a bit crazy right now, this clown brightens our day every time 🤡❤️

Whenever we check in on road accident survivor Blacky and his family, we’re greeted by this cheery soul who’s also Blacky’s best buddy 🐾

Have a great Sunday 🌸

This is why we are so dedicated to spaying, neutering, and supporting owned pets, many of whom were once street animals themselves. Because the reality is this: unwanted puppies are being dumped on the streets, far too young to survive alone, just like these little ones reported to us this week.

They were lucky. The community came together to help find homes, we visited daily to feed and monitor them, and Dr. Asanka’s assistant, Kumara, also stepped in to care for them. These puppies were surrounded by kindness. But most are not this lucky. Most die slowly from starvation, disease, or on the roads before anyone even notices they existed 🥺

This is why sterilization matters. This is why we do what we do. Please help us continue this mission. Your donations allow us to prevent suffering before it begins 🫶🏽

Fluff, the street dog suffering from acute-on-chronic kidney disease, is slowly starting to feel better and we couldn’t be happier for him ♥️ We don’t know what Fluff’s life was like before, but we do know he was most likely abandoned on the streets once his kidney disease began, with a scar on his neck from being tied up. Due to how critical his condition was, our cofounder decided to foster him permanently so Fluff would never have to return to the streets again.

He is truly fighting to live this life full of love he is now living, and we are fighting alongside him every single day. Getting him to eat is still a real struggle, but he is now enjoying little walks, becoming brighter, and improving slowly day by day. Hopefully today he will return to the vet to have his sutures removed.

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and supported Fluff’s journey 🫶🏽

Blacky update ♥️ Blacky is still receiving treatment for tick fever as his latest blood work is not yet showing the improvement needed before he can safely undergo his leg amputation. Thankfully, his overall condition is much better and we have now brought Blacky back to his owners for 10 days so they can continue giving all of his medications from home 🥹

Our team will be checking in regularly to ensure everything is being followed strictly so Blacky can continue improving and move forward with his surgery.

We are incredibly thankful to Dr. Asanka and his assistant Kumara for taking in Blacky and helping him through this first stage of recovery with such dedication and care. And thank you so much to everyone who has donated and supported Blacky so far 🫶🏽

Happy Mother’s Day to every kind of mum making the world softer. 💖

To the mothers holding babies, toddlers, teenagers, and the ones who’ve grown and gone. To the grandmothers and godmothers. The aunties who show up. The friends who mother without a title.

To the dog mamas nursing their pups in the dirt. The cats raising litters in forgotten corners. The animals who love fiercely with no language but warmth.

Today we think of them all, across every country, every species, every shape that love takes.

At The Dziko Project, the mothers we meet in Sri Lanka don’t always get a gentle start. But every spay, every vaccine, every moment of care we give is a gift to them and to the babies who will never have to be born into suffering.

To every mum who has ever protected something smaller than herself: we see you. We are doing this for you.

Happy Mother’s Day from our little team to yours.

With love from The Dziko Project ♥️

P.S. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate the mums in your life today, how about helping one who really needs it? A small donation goes a long way for the animal mamas we care for in Sri Lanka. Link in bio.

Fluff was reported to us in December, abandoned and dying: an elderly street dog in critical condition, requiring an immediate blood transfusion and diagnosed with severe anemia from tick fever, kidney disease, and multiple complications. Too fragile to return to the streets, he has since been lovingly fostered and closely monitored by our co-founder Rosie, where he went on to do incredibly well and maintain a stable, well-managed condition 🥹

This week, everything changed. Following a sudden attack by a street dog, Fluff developed severe trauma and large haematomas requiring emergency veterinary intervention. Despite making it through surgery, the stress and anaesthesia have triggered an acute deterioration of his kidneys, an acute-on-chronic crisis that nearly cost him his life. After three urgent vet visits, constant monitoring, and around-the-clock care, Fluff is still here and still fighting. And so are we ♥️

We urgently need your support to continue with his care. Please consider donating to help Fluff keep going 🫶🏽

The magic of skin healing ✨ On January 31st, we treated this street dog for mange, one of the most common skin conditions in Sri Lanka. This week, we saw him again… and look at that transformation. His fur is growing back, his skin is healing, and he’s looking so much better ♥️ We might need to figure out how to safely catch him next, as he’s in urgent need of a little “pedicure” 👀 Thank you to for their donation of Easectos, we couldn’t do it without you 🫶🏽

Blacky update ♥️ It has been confirmed through blood tests that Blacky has tick fever, so he has now started treatment for the next week. Dr Asanka will repeat blood tests before moving forward with the leg amputation.

Blacky is doing really well 🥹 he is happy, stable, and being carefully looked after by assistant Kumara, who makes sure he is eating properly and toileting comfortably. The wound is looking amazing!

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated and supported Blacky’s recovery so far. And a special thank you to Dr Asanka and his team for their continued care and dedication to giving him the best chance possible 🫶🏽
