The Jeevawaka Fund
The Jeevaka Fund was established in the year 1999 on the request of the Director of the Cancer Institute in Maharagama, the Late Dr. Bernard Randeniya. From that time onwards, this foundation has been instrumental in actively raising funds to finance medical equipment and drugs for the Cancer Hospital (Apeksha), Maharagama, as well as patients who are unable to afford consultation and treatment for their ailments.
The brain-child behind the Jeevaka Fund is Mrs. M. B. Assauw, Director-Deposits at Mercantile Investments, who was inspired by the passionate benevolence of former Pakistani Cricket Captain, Imran Khan – who build a cancer hospital in Lahore in memory of his mother who succumbed to this deadly disease.
As the amazing story goes, Imran – despite being a celebrity – faced a great many obstacles due to his wealthy associates and friends stepping down from contributing to the cause when he requested for donations. Undeterred by this turn of events, he strove to achieve his goal by travelling across towns and villages on a bullock cart and sacrificing comfort and luxuries to aid those who were struck by cancer.
