The CSO INTERCEDE Project (ADRA Sri Lanka and TFCDF) organized a 3 divisional level and 1 district level of nutrition fairs and street drama awareness programs in the Norwood Divisional area of Nuwara Eliya District between 3rd February to 13th March 2026.

Malnutrition, poor dietary practices, and limited awareness of hygiene and sanitation remain key challenges among estate communities in the Norwood Divisional area of Nuwara Eliya District. These Campaign aimed to create a community learning platform where local residents, youth groups, and community organizations could actively participate in promoting better nutrition practices. These events brought together community members, youth groups, health officials, and estate management to raise awareness on nutrition, hygiene, sanitation and positive gender messaging programs to mainstream gender through promoting equality in nutrition at HHs.

Through interactive activities such as nutrition stalls, youth street dramas, cultural performances, and art competitions, participants learned about balanced diets and healthy lifestyle practices. Bogawanthalawa MOH officials conducted BMI screenings and health advice sessions, while locally available nutritious foods were showcased to encourage healthier eating habits.

More than 290 community members (Male Participants: 80, Female Participants: 162, Children: 75) participated across the events, demonstrating strong community interest and engagement in improving family nutrition and wellbeing.

In Palagala, many families traditionally focused on growing just one or two crops for commercial purposes. Awareness about nutrition home gardens and the importance of locally sourced food was limited. To address this, ADRA Sri Lanka, together with the Ministry of Health and local Civil Society Organizations (GNCSOs), organized a five-day Food Competition under the theme โ€œLocal Food Procurement and Preparation.โ€
The event brought together 20 GN-level Civil Society Organizations and 250 community members, creating a vibrant platform to promote healthy food practices. Participants prepared a variety of nutritious dishes, and a remarkable highlight was that many ingredients came directly from their own home gardens.

Through this initiative, community members learned about nutrition, food preparation, reducing food waste, and maintaining home gardens for year-round food security. The activity not only strengthened knowledge but also encouraged families to grow and consume healthier local foods.

โ€œEarlier I didnโ€™t maintain a home garden because of frequent elephant attacks in our area. After joining the ADRA training programmes, I learned the importance of nutrition home gardens. Now I grow several vegetables at home and earn about LKR 10,000 per month from my garden. Despite the challenges, I continue my cultivation and feel confident about improving my familyโ€™s nutrition and income,โ€ shared one beneficiary.
Today, many households in Palagala are taking small but powerful steps toward better nutrition, stronger food security, and sustainable livelihoods.

Palagala Youth Step Into the Spotlight to Champion Media and Nutrition Awareness

Young leaders in the Palagala Divisional Secretariat area are taking a powerful step toward community change after completing an intensive four-day media skills workshop under the CSO-INTERCEDE Project. The programme engaged 25 energetic members of the Youth Society "Yauwana Samaja Balamandalaya", highlighting a growing movement of youth actively contributing to local development.
Designed as a hands-on capacity-building initiative, the training equipped participants with practical skills in media production, graphic design, social media content creation, and photography. Through interactive sessions and real-world practice, the young participants learned how to transform ideas into compelling digital content โ€” laying the foundation for a dynamic and skilled Youth Media Club.
The initiative goes beyond technical skills. It empowers youth to become community communicators, using digital and social media platforms to share nutrition-related awareness messages and promote healthier practices. By placing modern communication tools in the hands of young people, the project strengthens youth leadership and encourages positive behavior change at community level.
Moving forward, the Youth Society is expected to play a key role in social media campaigns, awareness drives, and future project activities linked to nutrition and community engagement, ensuring the impact of the training continues well beyond the workshop.
The event was implemented by ADRA in partnership with RPK, with funding support from the European Union and field-level coordination from the Divisional Secretariat Office โ€“ Palagala

Sri Lanka is reeling after Cyclone Ditwah triggered devastating floods and landslides across the island.
Entire areas of Colombo and the central region are submerged, with the Kelani River overflowing into nearby communities.

According to the Disaster Management Centre, over 200 lives have been lost, 228 people are missing, and thousands of families have been displaced. More than 25,000 homes are destroyed, while 147,000 people are now in temporary shelters and nearly 1 million need assistance.

Rescue teams from Sri Lankaโ€™s armed forces, volunteers, and international partnersโ€”including India, Pakistan, and Japanโ€”are working around the clock to provide relief.

Authorities warn that landslide risks remain high as hillsides are water-logged from days of relentless rain.

This is Sri Lankaโ€™s deadliest natural disaster since 2017.
Let us keep the affected families and responders in our thoughts and prayers. ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ’™

A slight break from our usual office routine turned into a refreshing and rewarding day!
Our staff came together for a Garden Cleaning & Office Maintenance Day, mowing, sweeping, fixing, and creating a brighter space for all. More than just cleaning, it was a chance to strengthen teamwork, share laughs, and work side by side as one family.
We look forward to more days like thisโ€”with even more team activities to keep the spirit alive!
