“Hearing the words” You have cancer’ can be one of the most devastating moments in a person’s life. Yet compassion, dignity, and community have the power to transform that journey into one of hope and strength.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Sri Lanka Association of Washington, D.C., we came together to extend care and encouragement to patients undergoing chemotherapy at the Maharagama Indira Cancer Trust. As part of this initiative, we donated 50 Ensure nutritional supplement cans and 50 Jataa head wraps to support patients currently receiving treatment.
This effort went beyond material support. Through nourishment and thoughtfully designed head wraps, our goal was to help restore strength, confidence, and a sense of self during a challenging time.
The Sri Lanka Association of Washington, D.C. team thoughtfully partnered with Jataa.lk , founded by Mrs. Caroline Jurie (Former Mrs. World 2020). Jataa’s mission is to unbrand cancer transforming stigma into empowerment and redefining cancer awareness as a global fashion movement that honors courage and resilience.
At .lk , every head wrap tells a story of bravery, and every gesture reflects collective compassion. This special Jataa collection, designed in collaboration with Mod'Art International - Sri Lanka , was stitched by a young designer. Staying true to Jataa’s core values, the initiative also provides work-from-home opportunities for single mothers and young women, empowering them to earn with dignity from their homes.
Additionally, the 50 lactose-free Ensure nutritional supplements were carefully selected to support chemotherapy patients who are unable to meet their nutritional needs through regular meals. These supplements help maintain strength, preserve muscle mass, and prevent malnutrition during treatment. In Sri Lanka, Ensure is available only by prescription, ensuring that this vital support reaches those most in need.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported and believed in this cause. Together, we are not just giving we are standing alongside warriors and spreading hope.
Let us continue to un-brand cancer, together.
