Global Collaboration Inspiring Future Engineers 🎓

ReDI, together with UK volunteers Dr. Patrick Leaney and Mrs. Jane Groom, successfully delivered three engaging sessions to over 300 students from the Faculty of Manufacturing and Process Engineering at the University of Ruhuna.
Focusing on engineering practice, sustainability, and communication, the sessions sparked new thinking and inspired students to pursue impactful, future-ready careers.

A successful step towards nature-based solutions 🌱
In May 2023, Athulgama School students and teachers planted 100 bamboo plants to address soil erosion around their playground and access paths. One and a half years later, those plants are flourishing, strengthening the land and inspiring a new generation to care for their environment.

Rebuilding After the Floods 🌱| 18 & 19 February 2026

Along the banks of the Mahaweli River, communities came together to restore what the floods had damaged. 🌱
With the support of Sarvodaya, Udapalatha Pradeshiya Sabha and community volunteers, 300 bamboo plants were planted to help protect the riverbank and nearby villages at Gelioya.
A small step today for a stronger and greener tomorrow.

Mentoring the Next Generation of Professionals!

Excited to share the progress on Dr Patrick’s and Jane’s current volunteering efforts in Sri Lanka! Through the ReDI, they have been delivering presentations and workshops to universities and colleges focusing on practical skills essential for career growth. While these students are actively pursuing higher education, they often seek to extend their learning and careers and deepen their understanding of professional life. These sessions, covering subjects such as engineering practice, sustainability, and communication skills, are crucial for those who may be disadvantaged by a lack of access to guidance on real-world career development and opportunities. To date, we have presented to over 1,200 students across four universities, and the impact is clear: eight students have already reached out requesting ongoing mentoring by Patrick, and twelve by Jane. This work reflects the ongoing mission of investing significant time to help individuals grow, both professionally and personally, as they transition from academic study to the world of work.

Personal reflections on science education for disadvantaged!

Dr. Patrick Leaney, a volunteer with ReDI, shared his personal reflections on science education for disadvantaged and underprivileged young people at the Theme Seminar of the 81st Annual Sessions of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), titled “Empowering the Underprivileged through the Popularization of Science and Technology,” held on 8 December. He emphasized that underprivileged education is a relative term. The notion of being underprivileged can be shaped by multiple factors, including social, geographic, and economic contexts. Dr. Patrick summarized three key points at his presentation: the importance of mentoring alongside teaching, the understanding that quality education is always a two-way process between the educator and the learner, and the strong potential of online tutoring—especially when the right tools and support systems are in place.

🌟 Children’s Day in Sri Lanka | October 1st 🌟

To mark Children’s Day, we conducted a special training program for students on 2 October 2025 at Muwandeniya school—an inspiring day filled with learning, curiosity, and hands-on experience!
The session introduced the basics of composting using Effective Microorganisms (EM). Students prepared a pile of chopped Gliricidia leaves mixed with a small amount of cow manure and 1% EM–molasses solution, which is then placed on the ground in piles to ferment and transform into well-rotted, mature compost over 5–6 weeks. This simple yet powerful method supports sustainable agriculture and deepens their understanding of nature-based farming.
Through this activity, we aimed to:
Equip children with practical knowledge on preparing nutrient-rich compost;
Build understanding of the role of beneficial microorganisms in composting and soil health;
Inspire the next generation to care for the environment and and agriculture.
Their enthusiasm, commitment, and curiosity were truly inspiring.
We are proud to nurture future champions of sustainable agriculture!

🌱 World Food Safety Day | June 7 🌍

On , we celebrate our school’s Polytunnel Project — a hands-on journey towards growing safe, healthy, and sustainable food! 🥬🍅

From seed to harvest, students at Kalalpitiya Vidyalaya (Matale) are learning how to care for crops in a clean, controlled environment, free from harmful chemicals. It’s not just about growing vegetables — it’s about growing awareness, responsibility, and resilience for the future. 💚

Safe food = Healthy future! 🌾

🌍 On this World Bamboo Day, we at ReDI celebrate bamboo as a powerful tool for environmental sustainability! Not only is bamboo one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, but it also plays a critical role in carbon sequestration. A single bamboo grove can absorb up to 12 tons of carbon dioxide per hectare each year, helping to combat climate change. Plus, bamboo’s root system prevents soil erosion and promotes healthy ecosystems, making it an invaluable resource for sustainable development. Let’s continue to protect and promote this amazing plant to build a greener, more resilient future! 🌱🌿
