🌍 World Food Day 2024 | October 16

World Food Day is observed every year on October 16, bringing together more than 150 countries to raise awareness about global poverty, hunger, and the challenges of food insecurity. According to World Hunger Statistics, an alarming 785 million people worldwide don’t have enough food for a healthy lifestyle—that’s 1 in 9 people globally. The vast majority of those facing hunger live in developing countries, where poor nutrition is a leading cause of death among children under 5. In fact, 45% of child deaths in this age group are linked to malnutrition, totaling over 3 million deaths annually.

While solving world hunger may feel overwhelming, everyone can take part in the solution. On World Food Day, consider donating to your local food pantry, supporting global hunger relief organizations, or even paying off school lunch debt in your community. Small actions can have a meaningful impact.

World Ozone Day 2021: It is also known as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The ozone layer is a shield of gas that protects the Earth from the harmful rays of the Sun and helps in preserving life on the planet.

"The Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment show us that by acting together, anything is possible. So let us act now to slow climate change, feed the world’s hungry, and protect the planet that we all depend on." - Antonio Guterres

World Ozone Day is observed on 16 September annually. The day reminds the signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that depletes the Ozone Layer. On this day people from all over the world are expected to join the Montreal protocol for talks and seminars.

Life is not possible on Earth without the ozone layer. It is found in the upper layers of the atmosphere and is a highly reactive gas. It protects life on Earth by absorbing Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation and so is also known as Ozone Shield. Ultraviolet rays can cause several skin diseases.

Since nuclear weapons testing began on 16 July 1945, over 2,000 have taken place. In the early days of nuclear testing little consideration was given to its devastating effects on human life, let alone the dangers of nuclear fallout from atmospheric tests. Hindsight and history have shown us the terrifying and tragic effects of nuclear weapons testing, especially when controlled conditions go awry, and in light of the far more powerful and destructive nuclear weapons that exist today.

On 2 December 2009, the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 29 August the International Day against Nuclear Tests by unanimously adopting resolution 64/35. The resolution calls for increasing awareness and education “about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.” The resolution was initiated by the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with a large number of sponsors and cosponsors with a view to commemorating the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test site on 29 August 1991.

2010 marked the inaugural commemoration of the International Day against Nuclear Tests. In each subsequent year, the day has been observed by coordinating various activities throughout the world, such as symposia, conferences, exhibits, competitions, publications, lectures, media broadcasts and other initiatives.

Since its establishment, many bilateral and multilateral governmental level developments as well as broad movements in civil society have helped to advance the cause of banning nuclear tests.

World Photography Day is celebrated on August 19 every year. World Photography Day 2024 is a Worldwide celebration of the art, crafts, science, and history of photography. World Photography Day also encourages photographers from around the globe to share a single photo that encapsulates their World. The kind of photography we know today dates back to 1839. At that time, the French Academy of Sciences announced the Daguerreotype process. The process made it possible to create a highly detailed image on a sheet of copper and this sheet was coated with a thin coat of silver, and the process did not require the use of a negative. It became the first method for obtaining a permanent image with a camera. Over 40 years later in 1884, George Eastman from Rochester, NY refined the Daguerreotype process

🌍 Today is International Tiger Day! 🐅🌲

Celebrated on July 29th, this day raises awareness about the alarming decline in tiger populations. Once numbering 100,000 a century ago, there are now fewer than 4,000 tigers in the wild. The goal is to double this number by 2024 through the Tx2 Initiative, which raises $350 million annually for tiger conservation. 🐯💚

Funds support rangers, anti-poaching efforts, habitat protection, and research. Seventy percent of the world's tigers are in India, highlighting the need for global efforts to protect these majestic creatures.

Join FOCUS in raising awareness and supporting tiger conservation for a future where tigers and humans coexist harmoniously. 🌟

Nelson Mandela International Day 2024: On July 18th of this current year, Nelson Mandela International Day 2024 is celebrated and observed worldwide as an honoring event. Nelson Mandela International Day (also known as Mandela Day) is a yearly international celebration honoring Mandela that is observed on his birthday, July 18th. The request Nelson Mandela made in 2009 to honor him through serving communities rather than by celebrating his birthday still serves as the foundation of the Nelson Mandela International Day initiative. While 18 July continues to be the campaign's main focus, we implore campaign supporters to participate in long-term, sustainable initiatives.Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a South African anti-apartheid activist who presided over South Africa from 1994 to 1999, lived from 18 July 1918 to 5 December 2013. He was the first completely representative democratic election to elect a black head of state in the history of the nation. His administration concentrated on promoting racial harmony in order to erase the effects of apartheid. He presided over the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997 and was an ideological socialist and African nationalist. Nelson Mandela has received various honors. He is a legendary figure who overcame the apartheid system in South Africa. He was an advocate for human rights, a political prisoner of conscience, and a broker of world peace. Additionally, he was South Africa's first president to be chosen democratically (no biggie). The concept that each person has the potential to change the world and have an effect is honoured on Nelson Mandela International Day. Therefore, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the U.N. propose that you volunteer for 67 minutes in commemoration of his 67 years of public service.

World Population Day 2024: On July 11th of this current year, World Population Day 2024 is celebrated and observed all over the world as an awareness program. Every year on July 11, it is observed to increase public awareness of topics such as the effects of population growth, gender equality, the value of family planning, poverty, maternal health, and human rights. World Population Day is celebrated to raise awareness of population-related concerns, such as the world's rapidly expanding population, and to encourage action to address them. The main goal of this day is to highlight the importance of population issues more generally. We cannot ignore the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on society, the economy, and communities worldwide. Not everyone is equally affected, though. For example, women who work in front-line positions are disproportionately exposed to the coronavirus. The world's population is expanding quickly and was approximately 767.35 billion in 2019. Natural resources must be depleted in order to meet the demands of the expanding population. Some nations are experiencing an overpopulation problem. It is crucial to take the necessary action to manage the population growth in order to preserve the ecological and population balance. Supply chains are also disrupted globally, which has an effect on the accessibility of contraceptives and raises the chance of unwanted pregnancy. Countries are on lockdown as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, health systems are straining to keep up, various services, including those related to sexual and reproductive health, are disrupted, and gender-based violence has increased.

Welcome to the official page of the International Day of the Tropics, celebrated every year on June 29! 🌴

Join us in celebrating the incredible diversity and potential of the tropical regions. This day is dedicated to sharing inspiring tropical stories, showcasing expertise, and acknowledging the unique plant diversity and evolutionary wonders of the tropics.

Tropical nations have made remarkable progress, yet they face significant challenges that demand our focused attention. As we strive to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, it's crucial to address these challenges across various development indicators and data.

With the world population expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, the FAO estimates that global agricultural production must increase by 70%, and by nearly 100% in developing countries. However, our natural resources are limited. The gains in agricultural production cannot be achieved as before without risking the productive potential of agriculture.

To raise yields, save the environment, and tackle challenges such as climate change, we must embrace sustainable intensification of agriculture. We need to produce more with less, making a major shift towards sustainability in the 21st century.

Join us in our mission to support sustainable development in the tropics and beyond. Together, we can make a difference!
