🚻 Creating Safer & Healthier Learning Environments for Children 💚

In order to promote proper sanitation and hygiene among vulnerable school children in Puttalam District, Good Neighbors Sri Lanka (GNSL) successfully renovated toilet facilities in the following schools:

🏫 D.S. Senanayaka Vidyalaya
🏫 Saliya Model School
🏫 Ralapanawa Junior School
🏫 Dutugamunu Maha Vidyalaya
🏫 Vidyachakrawarthi Maha Vidyalaya
🏫 Galawewa Maha Vidyalaya

Through this initiative, a total of 2,932 students now have access to improved, safer, and more hygienic sanitation facilities, contributing to better health, dignity, and a more supportive learning environment. 🌱✨

Strengthening partnerships for better healthcare access 🤝🏥

The CEO of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA), Sri Lanka, held a productive discussion with the Country Head of Good Neighbors Sri Lanka regarding the facilitation of essential GIK medical equipment for disaster-affected communities across Sri Lanka, including discussions on tax exemption arrangements for the imported medical equipment.

This meaningful engagement reflects the shared commitment of both institutions to ensuring timely healthcare assistance and improving the well-being of vulnerable families during times of crisis. Together, they continue to promote hope, resilience, and a healthier future for communities in need.

Every Child Deserve safe drinking Water 💙

Imagine a school where children come to learn, but safe drinking water is not available, where handwashing is limited, and students face daily health risks just to stay in school.

This was the reality for many students across selected schools in Puttalam District.

Not anymore.

Through the WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) Project, Good Neighbors Sri Lanka has improved water and sanitation facilities in 5 schools, creating safer, healthier, and more dignified learning environments for children.

In response to the recent floods in the Puttalam District, Good Neighbors Sri Lanka conducted a rapid needs assessment to better understand the urgent needs of affected communities.

As part of this initiative, collaborative field-level discussions were held with the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) of Puttalam, the Divisional Secretary of Puttalam, and local community representatives.

These coordinated efforts aim to ensure that relief support is timely, targeted, and truly responsive to the needs of flood-affected families.

Together, we stand in solidarity with the communities affected and remain committed to supporting their recovery and resilience.

A heart for children, a heart for change. 💚

As a Global Ambassador of Good Neighbors, she previously visited Ethiopia to support climate response initiatives and continues to extend her compassion through meaningful acts of giving.

From Broken Walls to Digital Classrooms

Imagine a classroom where computers sit unused because the room is damaged. Where students dream of technology but have no place to learn it.

This was the reality for thousands of students in Karuwalagaswewa, Puttalam.

Not anymore.

Under our School Infrastructure, Good Neighbors Sri Lanka has fully renovated ICT rooms in 4 schools, giving 2,820 students a proper, safe, and inspiring space to learn digital skills.

We are deeply saddened to share that Mr. Minho Choi, Representative of Good Neighbors Ukraine & Romania and former Secretary General of Good Neighbors Global Partnership Center, passed away peacefully in Romania on April 28, 2026.

In 2011, he was ordained as a pastor. The following year, he began his first mission with Good Neighbors, and what followed was fourteen years of life given fully to others.

A Small Corner. A Big Change in Dignity 💜

In many rural schools, girls once lacked a private and safe space to manage menstruation. Some stayed home. Some struggled in silence. Others had no place to change or properly dispose of sanitary pads.

Not anymore.

Good Neighbors Sri Lanka has successfully renovated Menstrual Health Management (MHM) corners in four schools across the Karuwalagaswewa Division in the Puttalam District creating a meaningful change in the daily lives of adolescent girls.

What is an MHM Corner?
An MHM corner is a clean, private, and safe space within the school where girls can:

Change sanitary pads with dignity
Dispose of used pads hygienically
Store extra sanitary supplies
Freshen up comfortably in a secure environment

P/Saliya Model School
Vidya Chakrawarthi Maha Vidyalaya

Impact:
A total of 1,182 adolescent girls now have access to a safe and dignified space helping them stay in school, confident and empowered.

April Monthly Update 💚

We are pleased to present an overview of key developments and progress achieved across our ongoing projects during the month of April. This update highlights significant milestones, field-level impact, and the continued efforts made in collaboration with stakeholders to strengthen community well-being across Sri Lanka.

We sincerely appreciate the continuous support and partnership extended by all relevant government authorities and stakeholders in driving these initiatives forward.

The Handover and monitoring visit, along with the distribution and opening ceremony, was carried out under the WASH and school infrastructure initiatives across seven schools in the Karuwalagaswewa CDP.

The visit was attended by Mr. Yongsic An (Regional Coordinator, WARO), Mr. Sandip Gupta (General Manager, WARO), and the Country Head of Good Neighbors Sri Lanka, Mr. Dharmendra Karn.

As part of the seven-school renovation initiative, the team visited Saliya Model School one of the key beneficiary institutions to assess the progress and quality of implementation. The interventions at the school included renovating a classroom for use as a Menstrual Health Management (MHM) room, improving the girls’ washroom facilities, and upgrading the ICT room, thereby fostering a more inclusive, hygienic, and supportive learning environment.

The visit covers both the positive impact of the interventions and areas requiring further improvement, reaffirming a strong commitment to quality, safety, and sustainability in enhancing educational spaces for every child. 👏💚🫶🇱🇰
