Bio Energy Association of Sri Lanka - BEASL The Bio Energy Association of Sri Lanka (BEASL) was formed by a group of concerned citizens to promote indigenous resources for power and thermal energy.

The Bio Energy Association of Sri Lanka (BEASL) was formed by a group of concerned citizens who have long strived to promote the use of indigenous resources for both generation of electricity and thermal energy requirements, and thus reduce the increasing dependence on imported fossil fuels. WHY RENEWABLE ENERGY? Renewable energy comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human time

scale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, biomass and geothermal heat. Renewable energy helps reduce climate change which is a direct result of golal warming. By using renewable energy we also reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuel which are becoming more expensive. Since renewable energy comes from local sources, it improves our energy security too. WHY DENDRO POWER? Dendro power is the generation of electricity from sustainably grown biomass (fuelwood). It is particularly well suited to a tropical country like Sri Lanka. Unlike other renewable energy sources used for power generation, dendro power returns more than 60% of its revenue from the sale of electricity to the local community by way of fuelwood purchases and O&M (Operation & Maintenance) expenditure. ONE BILLION TREES for Fuel, Fodder & Fertility
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena launched a program on 21st October 2016 to plant one billion gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) saplings islandwide as a renewable energy source. In addition to its usefulness as a biomass fuel source, gliricidia offers multiple benefits to the society and the environment which could be stated in brief as "Fuel, Fodder and Fertility". LET'S BRIDGE THE GAP ! Most of the countries in the world are now moving away from coal, oil and even nuclear power and look towards sustainable and green energy. But sadly Sri Lanka continues to embrace polluting coal and oil for our electricity generation in spite of the enormous potential we have for clean energy. Our government is clear about its policy on renewable energy, and wants to increase the share of renewables in the electricity generation. Soorya Sangramaya (Battle for Solar Enefgy), planting of a bilion trees and also setting up of fuel wood plantations are some of the government initiatives in that direction. But, there is a clear disconnect between the policy and its implementation. While it is the aim of the government to have 20% of electricity generated by means of of Non-Conventional Renewable Energy (NCRE) by the year 2020, Ceylon Electricty Board (CEB) continues to propose more and more coal plants in their long term generation plans, so that the percentage allocated to NCRE will narrow over the years. Only strengthening the institutions that ensure a level playing field or all would help close this gap. Bio Energy Association of Sri Lanka seeks your support to carry this message to the public:
