Posing with the Russian Auger!!
Russian auger is a really useful sediment sampling tool in the field. Designed to take samples below the groundwater level the side filling chamber is inserted into the ground in the closed position and, once the target depth is reached, the handle is turned to capture your sample and closed again.

Meet Sanka!
Sanka is a postgraduate student at University of Peradeniya πŸŽ“ and currently undertaking research on assessing and comparing carbon stocks of donor seagrass 🌱 beds and the recently established seagrass restoration site in in Kalpitiya lagoon..
Here πŸ“Έ he is collecting soil samples using a Russian auger and labeling the initial samples for analysis. πŸ”¬
The restoration project will restore 0.5 hectare of seagrass within a year and complete the carbon stock assessment with the funds from

Posted β€’ Our team was on the road exploring , and the Triangle. They joined a couple of research assistants and volunteered on a Seagrass restoration project! The process involves the collection of seagrass plugs from donor beds and transplanting them in the shallow areas of the lagoon. Going forward, this will be an experience on offer for small groups who would like to engage in a conservation project while traveling actively. 🌿

It was a pleasure working with a like minded great team in the field.

We are ready to take another step forward πŸ€ŸβœŒοΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

This time our aim is to restore one hectare of seagrass! βœŒοΈβœŒοΈπŸ˜‡

For that, we found a new site with optimal conditions for planting new plugs, called Mattuthive Island in Puttalam lagoon.
Another great thing about this site is that the donar site is within just 500 m which makes our replanting work more efficient✌️✌️✌️🌱🌱🌞

As a start, we have done the mapping of this site using drone technology.πŸŒ±πŸŒ±πŸŒ±πŸŒ±πŸŒ±πŸŒŠπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Š
Await for more updates..

Did you know that dugongs possess a pair of tusks??? Not all, but the tasks are typically found in males that have passed puberty and in mature (40+ years) females.. They are formed by the first upper incisor teeth and are used as cutting πŸ—‘οΈ instruments for foraging.. 🌱
According to the fisherman who collected these tusks about 60 years ago, these tasks belonged to a lactating female dugong which weighed about 500-600kg.. Sad to think that they killed such a precious creature just for meat.. Dugongs were not protected and hunting them down was common back then and probably had led to the drastic decline of their numbers in Sri Lankan waters.
