This year’s International Day of Families, themed “Families, Inequalities & Child Wellbeing,” highlights how disparities in income, education, healthcare, digital access and essential services continue to shape children’s life chances. It also calls for stronger, integrated social protection systems that build family resilience, reduce poverty and create equal opportunities for all.

In solidarity with this global call, Child Action Lanka reaffirms its ongoing commitment to addressing the income, resource and opportunity gaps that impact families and children’s wellbeing. Through holistic support and community-based initiatives, we strive to empower families with the strength, stability and opportunities they need to flourish.

Last week, children and youth from Child Action Lanka’s Gampola Special Needs Centre, together with members of the surrounding Udapalatha community, took an important step toward𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 through a dedicated 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽. A total of 54 individuals participated, and following comprehensive visual assessments, 33 students received prescription spectacles—opening up 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲.

Child Action Lanka’s commitment to empowering families and building resilient communities plays a vital role in ensuring sustainable wellbeing for every child—through the strength of collective support.

Across our 8 centres island-wide, we implement targeted programmes and initiatives that uplift and strengthen communities. These include:
* Caregiver education and support
* Women’s empowerment and livelihood programmes
* Welfare support for high-risk households
* Community mobilisation and welfare societies
* Emergency and crisis response frameworks
* Social enterprise and community employment pathways

Through these efforts, families are equipped with the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to take ownership of their futures—breaking cycles of poverty, building sustainable livelihoods, and creating environments where children can truly thrive.

Equipping families. Empowering communities. Because Every Child Can.

As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. At Child Action Lanka, resilient families and communities are the foundation that sustains our core pillars of protection, nourishment, and education for street-connected and underserved children.

Through targeted initiatives, we work alongside families—strengthening their capacity to take ownership of their futures and drive sustainable change within their communities.

Strong families and resilient communities become more than support systems—they become safe havens where children are nurtured, protected, and inspired to grow into their fullest potential.

Together, we are building stronger communities—so that Every Child Can.

When children feel 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲, they are free to dream, learn and grow.

Many children in the Child Action Lanka community, including those who are 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁-𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱, come from environments where safety and security are often uncertain. For them, CAL centres become more than just learning spaces—they become places of 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲, 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲. Here, children are surrounded by a 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 them for the future.

In this special moment, our children share in their own words why CAL centres are their 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 to be.

Because 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 nurture 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻—and secure children build 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀.

At every Child Action Lanka Child Development Centre, 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 are intentionally nurtured through thoughtful planning, compassionate action and consistent care.

From promoting habits that foster a 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, to remaining 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 that may signal distress, to creating time to truly 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆, CAL CDCs place 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 at the heart of all they do.

We spoke with a few of our CDC Managers to gain insight into the caring environments they have cultivated—spaces where children feel 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻, 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗱, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 to thrive.

Because 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲, they are free to dream, grow and build brighter futures.
