🎉 Happy New Year from your hosts - Blue Resources Trust and the Sharks International Organising Committee!

🇱🇰 Today we celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in Sri Lanka! The Sinhala and Tamil New Year, is one of the most important cultural and seasonal festivals in the country. It marks the transition of the sun from Pisces to Aries, symbolising a time of renewal and new beginnings.

🎊 As the country comes together to celebrate, please note that responses from some individuals and workplaces may be slower until around 20 April. We appreciate your patience during this festive period.

🙌 To everyone celebrating, we wish you a New Year filled with peace, happiness, and new beginnings!

🦈 Species of Focus: Sharks International 2026

Over the next month, we’re excited to introduce the four Species of Focus for Sharks International 2026, spotlighting species that are deeply connected to Sri Lankan waters.

These remarkable chondrichthyans can be found around Sri Lanka, yet much about their biology and ecology remains poorly understood. Throughout April, we’ll be sharing more about their ecology, conservation status, and the challenges they face - highlighting why their protection matters.

The four Species of Focus are:

🎭 Indian Ocean Blue-Spotted Maskray (Neotrygon indica)

🐉Sicklefin Chimaera (Neoharriotta pinnata)

🎸Stripenose Guitarfish (Acroteriobatus variegatus)

🪽Winghead Shark (Eusphyra blochii)

🌊 Stay tuned as we dive deeper into each of these fascinating and often elusive species. Join us from 4–8 May 2026 in Colombo, Sri Lanka for the world’s largest shark, ray, and chimaera conference.
