The Late Dr.Jayalath Jayawardena was a devoted parliamentarian, humanitarian and human rights activist who devoted his time and life towards serving the people. Being a medical doctor himself he was very much aware of the importance of good health and an efficient medical system for the general well being the society. He thus used his political career for the betterment of the standards of health
in the country, especially concentrating on those areas that needed the most attention. To that end some of the programs he implemented and funded were:
*Medical Health Camps
*Eye Clinics (issuing spectacles for those that needed them)
*Issuing wheelchairs and clutches
*Building of Water tanks.
*Health Education Programs
He was also extremely concerned and entrenched in improving the lives of those who had been devastated by the war, helped and saved by distributing sounding sirens to save their lives. While he was a devout practicing Catholic, he served all religions as if they were his own with the commitment and determination that ran in everything he approached. He worked tirelessly for people of all religions and would extend his helping hand to all, however he had a special place in his heart for the Madhu Church, Mannar. Although we may not be able to completely fill the shoes the great man left behind, the Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene Memorial foundation is established in the hope of completing the vision Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene had of building a better nation.
