rth American women to vote, and a part of the growing, though still comparatively small, legion of women entering the workforce. Over the decades, Zonta International has grown into a worldwide service organization of executives in business and the professions working together to advance the status of women. There are nearly 30,000 members in nearly 1,200 clubs in 67 countries all over the world. Stemming from these principles, the first Zonta Club of Sri Lanka was chartered by Mrs. Mano Mutucumarana Candappa in the year 1966 with the mission of improving the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women. Since then Zonta Club 1 of Colombo has changed the lives of women and children in Sri Lanka by paying special attention to rehabilitation programmes for victims of war, providing shelter for women who are victims of poverty, domestic violence, educating women on their rights, organizing numerous health camps, and assisting local authorities in formulating policies for the advancement of women.

Climate Justice – Zonta Club 1 of Colombo Assists women Recover and Build back Better from Flood Disaster

Recovery Phase :
A post-disaster situation can be an opportunity to enhance gender equality ,women’s empowerment, and present opportunities for new and more progressive gender roles .

The members through donations received provided 14 women from Kala Wava who had lost their crops and required new plants, with 560 fruit bearing plants to recommence their livelihood .

This initiative is in line with the Clubs Environmental policy in reducing our cabon footprint, where the Club pledged to plant a tree for every 10 KM members travelled for our projects .

💛 The Zonta Club I of Colombo, Sri Lanka, partnered with the Foundation of Goodness to support a six-month vocational training program for 28 women and girls from vulnerable backgrounds. Graduated in January 2026, participants gained skills to build sustainable livelihoods and move closer to gender equity.

Recovery Phase : Floods does more than wash away possessions, it erases years of hard work of families who are forced to pick up and start anew .

A post-disaster situation can be an opportunity to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment, with a focus on building back better, present opportunities for new and more progressive gender roles .

Zonta Club 1 of Colombo moved onto recovery of women entrepreneurs affected by the disastor . Members travelled to Kala Wava- Anuradhapura an area badly affected by the floods and provided sewing machines, fabric and other necessary items to 7 women, who had lost their means to a livelhood. The women were also provided training by Singer Sri Lanka .
Most of our benificiaries are single mothers, being the sole breadwinner supporting three-four children . The women were deeply grateful to Zonta for assisting in rebuilding their lives

Zonta Club 1 of Colombo moving onto recovery of women entrepreneurs affected by disaster helps 7 women recommence their sewing businesses after being affected by the recent floods. Five of the women are from Vijithapura. The club through donations from two donors were able to purchase 7 sewing machines from Singer. The distribution will take place in Galneva Anuradhapura

Menstrual Hygiene and Period Dignity

Zonta Club 1 partners Selyn Foundation - BleedGood program and Grassrooted in conducting a workshop at Thaksala Maha Vidyalaya,Mahamukalanyaya in Ibbagamuwa, Kurunegala on 22nd Jan at 9 am to 1 pm .The club supported climate-friendly reusable menstrual solutions to the children as well
Some of the areas focused on:
• Reproductive health and Menstrual Health Management session- Dr.Sathyani Wevita
• Engagement of men and boys-
o Explore their thoughts and feelings about menstruation.
o Identify common myths and harmful beliefs.
o Learn how to respond with understanding and support in their families, schools, and workplaces. (Resource person : Mr. Hans Billimoria)
• Climate and Menstruation: Caring for Planet Earth The link between menstruation and climate - menstrual waste and its impact
o Eco-friendly practices, reusable products, and sustainable menstrual health
o Femme-Care reusable pad distribution.

The program was supported by the funds raised by the Fitness walk conducted in November 2025 .
