Poultry Chick Distribution Empowers Matara Farmers
Matara, Sri Lanka — Following the successful technical training held on May 7, 2026, Caritas SED Galle moved swiftly to provide tangible support to rural households by conducting a distribution of poultry chicks to selected beneficiary farmers in the Matara District. This initiative serves as a direct extension of the Food Security Project, turning theoretical knowledge into active livelihood development.
The distribution was tailored to empower farmers with the physical resources needed to launch sustainable home-based poultry ventures. By receiving high-quality chicks immediately after their training, participants are better positioned to apply their new skills in animal health care and management. This phase of the project focuses on several key community outcomes:
Livelihood Diversification: Enabling families to move beyond traditional crop farming by introducing a reliable second stream of income.
Nutritional Support: Increasing the availability of protein-rich food sources directly within the home to support child development and overall family health.
Economic Independence: Reducing the financial burden of purchasing market-priced eggs and meat, while creating a surplus that can be sold locally.
This distribution underscores the commitment of Caritas SED Galle to holistic development—ensuring that education is matched with the necessary tools to build a resilient, self-sufficient, and food-secure future for the farming communities of Matara.
