*DEHERM celebrates 40 proud years as a development organization*
DEHERM proudly marks 40 years of dedicated service as a development organization.
The foundation of this journey was laid on 26th October 1985 in Ihala Keembiya village, Baddegama electorate of the Galle District, with the establishment of the Dimuthu Children’s Society under the leadership of a group of children. At a time when ethnic divisions, narrow ideologies, and rigid social attitudes were deeply rooted, children themselves stepped forward to take leadership in the challenging task of nurturing skilled, intelligent, and socially responsible young citizens for a changing world.
By 1990, as the organization evolved into a youth-led movement, it was officially registered as the Dimuthu Children and Youth Society. From that point onwards, DEHERM emerged as a child- and youth-centered development and educational institution, implementing a wide range of development initiatives. Cultural and artistic activities, libraries, drug prevention programs, and HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted disease prevention initiatives strengthened its early journey.
During its formative years, DEHERM collaborated with various non-governmental organization networks in Sri Lanka, further strengthening its institutional capacity. With a strong focus on the Millennium Development Goals, the organization established partnerships with numerous national and international agencies, including UNASL, Save the Children, AIDS Alliance, WHO, IRED, Worldview International, and UNDP.
Between 1998 and 2000, in response to emerging development trends, DEHERM reviewed its programs and adopted new strategic approaches. Priority areas included education, human skills development, youth unrest, poverty alleviation, environmental protection, disaster management, ethnic conflict resolution, and peacebuilding.
The major floods of 2003 and the tsunami disaster of 2004 marked a significant turning point in DEHERM’s development approach. Emergency relief and rehabilitation, housing and infrastructure development, community livelihood enhancement, child and youth psychosocial well-being, and youth vocational training programs were given high priority.
Since the early 2000s, a school-based green energy pilot program has been continuously implemented and is currently operating under the name Sobashakthi, along with leadership training and camp programs. While DEHERM’s work has primarily focused on the Southern Province over the past 40 years, plans have been in place since 2026 to expand selected programs to several districts in other provinces, covering 21 development sectors.
At present, DEHERM functions as a registered non-profit organization under the Companies Act. With 40 years of development experience built on mutual trust, friendship, and collaboration, we warmly invite local and international donor agencies, philanthropic communities, and all well-wishers to join hands with us in realizing the development aspirations of our people.

1985.10.26 දින ගාල්ල දිස්ත්රික්කයේ බද්දේගම මැතිවරණ කොට්ඨාසයේ ඉහළකීඹිය ග්රාමයේ ළමා පිරිසකගේ නායකත්වයෙන් කළ එළි දුටු දිමුතු ළමා සමාජය අප සංවිධානයේ මුල්ම අඩිතාලම විය. එකල සමාජය තුළ මුල්බැසගත් වාර්ගික අසමගිතාවයන්, පටු මතවාද හා ආකල්පවලට එරෙහිව යමින් නව ලොවට ගැලපෙන කුසලතා පූර්ණ, නැණවත් දරුවන් සමාජගත කිරීමේ අභියෝගාත්මක කාර්යභාරයක් ළමයින් විසින්ම නායකත්වය ගනිමින් ඉටු කරන ලදී.
1990 වන විට යෞවනත්වයට පත් මෙම සංවිධානය දිමුතු ළමා හා තරුණ සංගමය ලෙස මුල්ම ලියාපදිංචිය ලබා ගත්තේය. එතැන් සිට ළමයින් හා තරුණ තරුණියන් මූලික වූ සංවර්ධන හා අධ්යාපන ආයතනයක් ලෙස සංවර්ධන ව්යාපෘති ක්රියාත්මක කිරීමට පියවර ගන්නා ලදී. සංස්කෘතික හා කලා කටයුතු, පුස්තකාල, මත්ද්රව්ය නිවාරණ, HIV/AIDS හා ලිංගාශ්රිත රෝග නිවාරණය වැනි ප්රජා පාදක වැඩසටහන් මඟින් ආරම්භක ගමන ශක්තිමත් කර ගන්නා ලදී.
ආරම්භක අවධියේදීම ලංකාවේ විවිධ රාජ්ය නොවන සංවිධාන ජාල සමඟ එකතුව අප සංවිධානය ශක්තිමත් විය. සහාශ්ර සංවර්ධන ඉලක්ක කෙරෙහි වැඩි අවධානයක් යොමු කරමින් UNASL, Save the Children, AIDS Alliance, WHO, IRED, Worldview International, UNDP වැනි ජාතික හා ජාත්යන්තර ආයතන සමඟ හවුල්කාරීත්වයන් ගොඩනැඟීය.
1998–2000 කාලය තුළ සංවර්ධනයේ නව ප්රවණතා සලකා බලමින් වැඩසටහන් සමාලෝචනය කර නව උපායමාර්ගික ප්රවේශයන් වෙත යොමු විය. අධ්යාපනය, මානව කුසලතා සංවර්ධනය, තරුණ අසහනය, දිළිඳුකම, පරිසරය, ආපදා කළමනාකරණය, වාර්ගික අර්බුද හා සාමය ගොඩනැංවීම ප්රමුඛ කර ගන්නා ලදී.
2003 මහා ගංවතුර හා 2004 සුනාමි ව්යසනය අප සංවර්ධන ප්රවේශය මුළුමනින්ම වෙනස් කළ මොහොතක් විය. හදිසි ආපදා සහන, පුනරුත්ථාපන, නිවාස හා යටිතල පහසුකම්, ප්රජා ජීවනෝපාය සංවර්ධනය, ළමා හා යොවුන් මානසික සුවතාවය සහ යෞවන වෘත්තීය පුහුණු වැඩසටහන් සඳහා ඉහළ ප්රමුඛතාවක් ලබා දෙන ලදී.
2000 දශකයේ සිට අඛණ්ඩව ක්රියාත්මක වූ පාසල් පාදක හරිත-බලශක්ති නියමු වැඩසටහන අද සොබාශක්ති නමින් ක්රියාත්මක වන අතර, නායකත්ව පුහුණු හා කඳවුරු වැඩසටහන් ද සමඟින් ක්රියාත්මක වේ. වසර 40ක් පුරා දකුණු පළාත කේන්ද්රීය වූ අප වැඩසටහන්, 2026 වසරේ සිට සෙසු පළාත්වල තෝරාගත් දිස්ත්රික්ක කිහිපයකටද ව්යාප්ත කිරීමට සැලසුම් කර ඇත.
අප සංවිධානය දැනට සමාගම් පනත යටතේ ලියාපදිංචි ලාභ නොලබන සංවිධානයක් ලෙස ක්රියා කරයි. වසර 40ක සංවර්ධන අත්දැකීම් හා අන්නෝන්ය විශ්වාසය මත ගොඩනැගුණු මිත්රත්වය ශක්තිමත් කරමින්, ජනතාවගේ සංවර්ධන අභිලාෂයන් සාර්ථක කර ගැනීම සඳහා අප සමඟ අත්වැල් බැඳ ගන්නා ලෙස දේශීය හා විදේශීය දායක ආයතන, පරිත්යාගශීලීන් සහ සියලුම හිත්වාදින් අපි ආදරයෙන් ආරාධනා කරමු.
