The Galle Literary Festival announces with great sorrow the death of its founder, Geoffrey Dobbs, who passed away near his home in Wells, England, on August 18, 2026. Geoffrey launched the Galle Literary Festival in 2007 to showcase domestic and foreign authors, and promote high-end tourism and Sri Lankan culture in the wake of the 2004 tsunami. Rest in Peace, Geoffrey.

Thank you for all the wonderful memories.

We know this isn’t the news many were hoping for, and trust us, we feel the same.

The 2026 edition of the Galle Literary Festival will be postponed as we take time to review and strengthen our organisational structure to secure a sustainable path forward.

Since 2007, GLF has celebrated stories, ideas, and creative exchange, and this pause will help us continue doing just that with renewed purpose.

We remain committed to bringing together readers, writers, and thinkers and we look forward to returning in 2027 with fresh energy and ideas.
