DON'T BE QUIET
The proposed bill in Sri Lanka seeks to establish an online safety commission with the power to limit free speech. This commission could direct users, service providers, and others to remove content and block access to accounts based on extremely vague and overbroad grounds. This is a direct threat to freedom of expression, a fundamental human right enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. According to Freedom House's 2020 report, internet freedom has been declining globally for ten consecutive years now. In Sri Lanka itself, there have been numerous instances of internet shutdowns and social media blocks in recent years (source: Freedom House). We must not allow this bill that further threatens our digital rights and freedoms to pass unchallenged. Stand up for free speech online - sign this petition today!
