Predictions: From12 – 18 May, the US NOAA Climate Prediction Center predicts that the rainfall shall increase across SL.
During this period, Western Hills & Plains are predicted to receive rainfall over 105-135 mm. From 13 - 19 May, wind speeds
are predicted to be 6-10 m/s.

Monitoring: A Low Pressure Area (LPA) developed over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) on 10th May, with wind speed ranging from
20-30 m/s. The LPA remained over the southwest of Bay of Bengal until 12th May. This caused the rainfall across SL to
increase. During 6 - 12 May, the average daily rainfall was 14 mm. The highest daily rainfall was in in Ratmalana - 202 mm on
12 May, Ratnapura - 131 mm on 12 May, Katunayaka – 94 mm on 8 May, Puttalam – 89 mm on 11 May. During 4 – 10 May,
winds were from Northwest with 2–5 m/s. Overall, the temperature was typical for May across SL. The Eastern Plains had an
average maximum temperature of 32.9°C. The Eastern Hills had an average minimum temperature of 19.2°C.

During the past week, daily average AQI levels remained within the “Good” to “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range. The highest daily average AQI value of 141 was recorded in Digana on 5th May, falling under the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category. On 6th May, Akurana also recorded a daily average AQI value of 101, which also fell under the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category.

In general, cleaner air flowed into Sri Lanka from the southwestern direction during this period, contributing to generally favorable conditions. However, polluted air masses were also transported toward Sri Lanka from India through the Arabian Sea.

In terms of weekly averages, Akurana, Digana, Nuwara Eliya, Colombo, Mirihana, Negombo, Battaramulla, Chilaw, Kalawana, and Anuradhapura recorded “Moderate” AQI levels, while all other monitored locations remained within the “Good” category.

Weekly Air Quality Index (AQI) Levels:

Moderate (AQI 51-100): Akurana, Digana, Nuwara Eliya, Colombo, Mirihana, Negombo, Battaramulla, Chilaw, Kalawana, Anuradhapura
Good (AQI 0-50): Kurunegala, Ambalantota, Mannar, Trincomalee, Jaffna

RSMC Latest Update – 11.30 AM IST

A Low Pressure Area (LPA) is currently located over the southwest Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to increase rainfall across Sri Lanka, with the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Northern, and North-Western provinces likely to receive over 100 mm of rainfall.

However, according to the latest RSMC predictions, the LPA is not expected to intensify further. At present, the probability of it developing into a cyclonic storm remains very low.
