WECare Worldwide

WECare Worldwide WECare Worldwide is a UK Registered Charity (reg no. 1162386) set up by veterinary surgeons to help.
(219)

As vets, we endeavour to provide the very best standard of care for all of our patients. Thing is, we have now acquired 3 million more so we need your help! WECare Worldwide is an organisation set up by UK volunteers in Newcastle upon Tyne, to give free veterinary care to animals in need worldwide. Ultimately, WECare Worldwide plan to extend veterinary services around the globe but, right now, we

are concentrating on tacking the issues with the street dog population in Sri Lanka, where we have witnessed some of the worst cases we have ever seen. It is estimated that there are up to 3 million street dogs in Sri Lanka. WECare Worldwide are in the process of carrying out a 5 year plan, in which we will look to help eliminate rabies in the country and also humanely reduce the numbers of unwanted street dogs. We also provide top level treatment for the many sick and injured animals on the island, including those affected by maggot wounds, fractured bones and hot water burns, which are very common. We provide all of our expertise for free 24/7, 365 days a year but we really need help with the cost of medicines and equipment which, we can assure you, are most definitely not free!! Please help us to make monumental changes to the lives of these animals. You can find out more about the charity on our website or by contacting the committee at [email protected]

You can donate in person at any Westway, Value Vets or Easyvets branch by cash or card. You can also donate online at http://wecareworldwide.org.uk/donate/

Guys, Paprika wants you to know that yes, it IS her on the promotional material, and no, she won’t sign autographs 😑 What she WILL do though is send you quarterly life updates if you sign up to our sponsor a dog programme and choose her as your DOC (dog of choice, duh) 🤩 This girl has a pretty colourful life (she’s a street dog who lives half with her guardians and half with us at our office, so she gets treated like a bougie princess and taken on trips to the beach, while also getting to roam the streets and do what she damn well pleases 💅🏼). Keen to hear from this local celeb while simultaneously helping to fund our vital work? Click the link in the comments to sign up!

Cadbury was picked up on Good Friday in a very sorry state 🥺 At just eight weeks old he was suffering with a severe case of mange, a maggot wound on his bum, tick fever, and a belly full of worms – he was nooooooooot having a nice time at all 😞 Our first port of call was flushing the wound and evicting those pesky maggots (they’re not even paying rent 😤), cleaning him up, dressing the wound and popping him on a delicious cocktail of meds to help his skin, treat the tick fever, say sayonara to the worms, and soothe his pain (he was so itchy his skin had hardened from all the scratching 😫). Since then, he’s been having medicated baths and Bio Oil massages (lucky pup, us humans have to pay top dollar for that 😜) and we’ve even spied a thin layer of fur come through!! 😍 He’s going to be checked into Hotel WECare for a while, so if you fancy donating a few quid towards his stay with us, we would adoooooooooore you! 🫶🏼 (Donation link in the comments.)

Oh, and while you’re at it – what colour do you think his fur will be?? 🤔 Pop your guesses in the comments, we’e got our own bets going on 😅

Apex was called in by his guardians as he had a pretty savage maggot wound on his ear, and while his condition was severe enough to come in straight away, we couldn't admit him for a number of days as our hospital was full 😔 This is truly one of the hardest parts of our job — knowing that animals are suffering because we’re already bursting at the seams with emergency cases. It never gets easier.

As soon as a kennel was available, we got him in and set to work healing the wound. What we thought would be a lengthy but simple case turned into a much trickier situation than we could have imagined, but we NEVER gave up on him.

This patient and friendly boy endured 22 bandage changes, a couple of surgeries to close the wound, lots of antibiotics to clear a nasty infection that caused the wound to keep breaking down, multiple stents to keep the ear canal open, aaaaaaaaand a neuter, before he was FINALLY ready to go home, a cool four months after coming in 🎉

We will ALWAYS go the extra mile for dogs like Apex, no matter how difficult or costly it gets. Long-stay patients put a massive dent in our finances, but if we didn’t help them, who would?

We created our street dog café, Mutts, as a way of raising both funds AND awareness for our vital work at WECare 💪🏽 But we didn’t want it to be a half-arsed attempt at a café – we were adamant the menu and space had to be as good as our mission, and you know what? We think we succeeded! 🩷 So, if you are in Sri Lanka, come and enjoy a bangin’ coffee, some vegetarian delights, and a stunning ocean view, all while hanging out with community dogs who perfectly encapsulate why we do what we do. The best part? 100% of profits go back to WECare, so go ahead and order that second coffee! 😏

Ohhhhhhhh, Yali, you silly billy! This 10-year-old sweetheart came to us after jumping in a fire (!) a week previously. (Our impulsive bad decisions look more like texting an ex rather than jumping into embers, but we’re not here to judge 😅).

She had burns on her paws and three of her legs, so we got her cleaned up and bandaged, and did our usual admit protocol of checking overall health, administering flea/tick/worm preventatives, and giving rabies and DHPL vaccines. Turns out she also had tick fever (very common in street dogs) so we popped her on meds for that 🙏🏼

We also realised she was vomiting up her food and having issues with reflux, so we investigated and tried out a cocktail of anti-reflux meds, tapering them down once symptoms subsided. As soon as her wounds had healed and she was vomit-free when off meds, she was able to go back to her loving guardians (who have been looking after her since she was a wee little pup 🥹).

Sidenote: eagle-eyed viewers will notice she’s also got a bit of a wobbly back leg 👀 We’re told it’s from a fracture she sustained as a puppy, but she still gets around on it fine 💪🏼

Bye, Yali – we hope you’ve learned a valuable lesson about not jumping into hot things 🫠

We know we often make things look easy here at WECare, but the reality is that we're making difficult decisions day in, day out, in very challenging circumstances 😔 Jumpy is a perfect example of this – this cuddly cutie had a maggot wound on his head that resulted in multiple surgeries, which was further complicated by the fact he has FIV (feline AIDS) 😲

Join us as we battle to save the cat we all fell madly in love with, over on Janey's YouTube channel:

This poor cat wouldn't heal... we gave him one last chance

WHAT a difference a couple of weeks makes!! 🤯 Petty arrived last month with her right eyeball protruding, having hit by a vehicle the night before. She was super stressed, panting heavily, and clearly in a LOT of pain 🥺She had some bleeding in the affected eye, but there was some twitching when we tested her blink reflexes, so we suspected the eye was still viable 🎉 The plan was to place her eyeball back in the socket (under general anaesthetic, of course) in an attempt to save it, so we did that, stitched it shut (leaving space to administer eye drops), got her sorted with some top notch pain meds, and waited a week before removing stitches and seeing if it was successful…🤞🏼

Guess what? IT WAS!! Petty’s eye was fully functional, and after a further week of eye drops and care, she was good to go home, with two working eyeballs, full vision, and a MUCH happier disposition 🥹 YAY FOR PETTY! 💛
