World Wetlands Day is **celebrated every year on **📅 2 February. It marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands (also known as the Ramsar Convention) on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar. This day raises global awareness about the vital importance of wetlands for biodiversity, climate resilience, water security, and people everywhere.

Each year also has a theme to focus attention on specific aspects of wetland conservation — for example, the theme for World Wetlands Day 2026 is “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage.”
