Colombo Friend In Need Society

Colombo Friend In Need Society Provides Artificial Limbs The Colombo Friend-in-Need Society (CFINS) is the oldest Charitable Organisation in Sri Lanka.

Established originally in the year 1831 under the Patronage of then Governor Sir Edward Barnes, the Society has now completed over 175 years of service to the people of Sri Lanka. The CFINS has continued to this day the tradition of having the countryโ€™s Head of State as its ex-officio Patron. Itโ€™s activities are managed and directed by a Board of Management consisting entirely of volunteers among

whom are several leading members of the Medical Profession, Engineers, Company Directors and Executives from the Corporate Sector. The Jaipur Foot Programme, administered by CFINS, is the main provider of prosthetic limbs and orthotic appliances to disabled persons in Sri Lanka. It runs a prosthetic/orthotic Workshop in central Colombo, where disabled persons come in to get custom-fitted artificial limbs, developed under the Jaipur foot technique, to give them a new lease of life. Today The CFINSโ€™s Limb-fitting Centre has become a one- stop service facility for all disabled persons who require prosthetic, orthotic and orthopaedic appliances to overcome their disabilities. Amputees from areas outside Colombo are provided free board and lodging in the Transit Hostel run by the CFINS, to enable them to stay in the premises until their limbs are fabricated, fitted and aligned and they are trained to use them.

Colombo Friend in Need Society (CFINS) was delighted to welcome approximately 75 interns from Deloitte for an insightful visit and knowledge-sharing session.

The interns were introduced to the history and mission of CFINS, the work carried out to support individuals who have experienced limb loss, and the wider social impact of restoring mobility. Through a specially curated presentation and informative knowledge-sharing sessions, they learned how access to an artificial limb can help an individual regain independence, return to work, pursue an education, and participate more fully in family and community life.

The programme also highlighted the important role that individuals and corporate organisations can play in sustaining this impact through greater awareness, meaningful partnerships, and responsible giving.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Ranjan Dias and Mr. Supem de Silva for leading the knowledge-sharing sessions and generously sharing their expertise and insights with the visiting interns.

We also thank the dedicated CFINS team, whose careful planning, coordination, and invaluable behind-the-scenes work helped make the visit both meaningful and successful.

Our sincere thanks to the Deloitte interns and team for taking the time to visit CFINS, engage with our work, and learn more about the lives transformed through restored mobility.

Every visit creates greater awareness. Every conversation carries our mission further.

Together, we can empower more steps and transform more lives.

For many of us, walking is something we rarely think about. But for thousands of Sri Lankans who have lost a limb due to the war, the landmines, road and train accidents, diabetes, cancer, vascular disease, and other life-changing circumstances, taking a single step again can mean reclaiming independence, dignity, and hope.

At Colombo Friend in Need Society (CFINS), we believe that mobility changes lives. Every artificial limb we provide gives someone the opportunity to return to work, care for their family, pursue an education, and live with renewed confidence.

Today, we invite you to become part of that journey.

Whether you choose to donate, sponsor a limb, partner with us, or simply share our mission, your support helps restore more than mobility, it restores possibility.

Together, we can empower a step and transform a life.

At just 24 years old, he lost his leg. In 1984, he became one of the earliest beneficiaries of ๐—–๐—ผ๐—น๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ผ ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ก๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฆ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜† (๐—–๐—™๐—œ๐—ก๐—ฆ), receiving his first artificial limb as beneficiary ๐˜‘๐˜17.

Over the past 40 years, CFINS has provided him with around ten prosthetic limbs, ensuring he could continue living, working, and caring for his family as each limb naturally wore over time.

With those limbs, he carried 50 kg rice bags for work; built a home alongside his wife, making the concrete blocks themselves; and worked tirelessly to educate his daughter, who is now a teacher in Kantale.

His previous replacement was received at our Mobile Limb Camp in Minneriya nearly ten years ago. Unable to travel regularly to Colombo, he recently received his latest replacement at the CFINS Mobile Limb Camp held in Polonnaruwa on 6 ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ 2024

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, he says:

His story is a powerful reminder that an artificial limb is more than a device; it restores dignity, independence, opportunity, and hope. For many of our beneficiaries, our commitment doesn't end with one limb; it continues for a lifetime.

๐Ÿ’™ Every step tells a story. Every limb changes a life.
