Rebuilding Hope After Cyclone Ditwah – Supporting Our Students

Cyclone Ditwah left a devastating impact on Sri Lanka, paralyzing the economy and forcing communities to rebuild inch by inch. In this hour of need, the generosity of our donors has been nothing short of extraordinary. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to each one who came forward to support us.

Our education support project, originally planned for 4,000 students in Ampara and Maha Oya, had to be postponed due to the cyclone. We are now pleased to share that from 15–17 January, we will visit these areas and distribute essential school items to nearly 4,000 students in remote schools. Many of these children have been directly affected by Cyclone Ditwah, and thanks to the kindness of our donors, they will be blessed with the supplies they need to continue their education.

With the generosity and support of many donors, we have been able to extend our reach and support nearly 4,500 students during this critical time.

Last month, together with our major donor for this project, we visited a school in Matara and distributed school essentials to its students. During this visit, the donor also pledged to support the establishment of a computer lab for the school—a project we hope to implement very soon.

The generosity of our donors will enable Tarana to not only provides school essentials but also helps parents lessen their burden and ensure their children’s education continues uninterrupted. Together, we are rebuilding lives, restoring hope, and shaping brighter futures.

We’re delighted to announce the completion of the Sanitation Project at Landemaga rural school. Our building contractors have been working towards this over the past two months. The school held an opening ceremony for the facilities and our team-member from the U.S. was there to participate.

We also used the occasion to distribute 200 bags of school supplies which included books, calculators, geometry sets, and other stationery, as well as basic hygiene essentials. These supplies were arranged and shipped to Sri Lanka by our team-members in the U.S.

This is a major milestone for our work at Landegama. These facilities will give Landegama’s students the health, safety, and comfort required as a foundation for a successful education, and will serve the school for years to come.

We undertook this project knowing that we would need to recoup the costs, but it was an essential need that could not be ignored.
We thank you for your continued support and donations. This project would not be possible without them. Please enjoy the photos of the opening ceremony!

Our focus for the last few months on the Landegama Rural School Project has been on planning and preparing for the construction of new sanitary facilities. Since the project started, we’ve selected a contractor to do the construction, and we’ve received approval from the relevant government authorities to proceed.

This has taken significant coordination and effort from our team members, especially our project manager who is working with all parties on the ground. At last, we’re very pleased to report that we’ve begun construction on the sanitary facilities, starting with a groundbreaking ceremony that took place on July 31st!

We expect the construction to be completed within the next two months and, if all goes to plan, one of our team members will be visiting the school to see the completion and to hand over school supplies that we’ve organized for the students.

The construction for the sanitary facilities has now begun. The contractors also kindly provided a yogurt snack for the children on the first day.
Please enjoy the pictures of the groundbreaking ceremony and beginning of construction, and thank you again for your continued support!

🖥️ Tarana STEM Computer Labs Update 🖥️

On May 24th, we installed a computer lab at Kalugalla Kanishta Vidyalaya, North Western Province, about 36 km North of Kurunegala. The school received 6 computers, including the construction of a computer table in their existing computer room, as well as chairs that we purchased. The computer lab will benefit 25 students at this rural school. This is the sixth lab that we have installed as part of this project, with many thanks to our team of people for coordinating these installations.

🏠 Tarana Housing Project Update 🏠

This month Tarana completed the construction of the first house under our Housing Project. The recipient of the house is a single mother with an 18 month old child, in the Gothamigama, Kataragama area. The project was a collaboration with the Wayamba Api group, who suggested the recipient and contributed the construction of the bathroom. The house consists of two bedrooms with a living/dining area and a kitchen.

Many thanks to the donations received towards our housing project. This would not have been possible without your generosity. We also want to thank the members of the Tarana Housing Committee who have worked hard to coordinate the project to completion.

The house was handed over with a ceremony on March 13th. Please enjoy the photos below.

Tarana is participating in Global Giving’s “Little by Little” campaign until March 28th. Donations up to $50 USD will be matched by 50%. Donations through Global Giving are tax-deductible in the US and UK.

Your continued support will help more families with their essential housing needs. Thank you.

✨ Tarana STEM Computer Labs Update ✨

Last week we started the year with the installation of a computer lab at Medawala Vijaya Vidyalaya, Boossa near Galle in the Southern Province. The school received 6 computers with a new computer table and the required wiring. The computer lab will benefit 140 students and 17 teachers at this school.

The students had a hand in setting up the computers, as you can see in the pictures, the girls were eager to learn how it was all put together. A brief celebration was held for the occasion. This was the final project assisted by Hareen Stembo and team, as he is moving on. Thank you Hareen for all the hard work over the last year!
