When lives are at stake, every moment counts.

Following an urgent appeal from Dr. Nishadi Ranasinghe, Consultant Pediatrician at Kotelawala Defence University Hospital, through our District Governor, Kumar Sundararaj, the Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan acted immediately to mobilise the resources needed to donate a pediatric ultrasound scanner to the hospital.

Within just two days, the scanner was procured and delivered, ensuring it was available to support the treatment of children with dengue without delay.

Last Thursday, members of our Club had the opportunity to visit the hospital and hear firsthand from Dr. Ranasinghe and her team about the difference the scanner has already made. The machine has enabled the early diagnosis of internal bleeding in children with dengue, allowing clinicians to make timely interventions and provide life-saving care when it matters most.

We are grateful to everyone who helped make this project possible. Through partnerships and service, Rotary continues to strengthen healthcare and improve outcomes for children and families in our communities.

July – Rotary Maternal and Child Health Month

This month, members of the Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan visited the Kusum Sevena Community Service Centre, a community initiative supported by our Club.

Located within the Bloemendhal community and run by Sister Roshini, Kusum Sevena provides a safe and nurturing environment for children from the Bloemendhal and Aluthmawatha underserved communities.

Approximately 131 children are supported through its preschool, day-care and evening educational programmes. Beyond education, the centre plays an important role in the everyday wellbeing of these children, providing breakfast for preschoolers, refreshments for children attending evening classes, day care for working families, and a safe space where children can learn and grow.

Our Club's monthly contribution accounts for nearly 30% of the centre's regular monthly operational support, helping Kusum Sevena continue providing these essential services to the children and families who depend on them.

As Rotary marks Maternal and Child Health Month this July, our visit was a reminder that supporting a child's wellbeing extends beyond healthcare. Good nutrition, safe environments, early childhood care and access to education all contribute towards giving children a healthier start in life.

A full house, an engaging discussion, and a shared vision for a better Colombo.

Today, President Joevinie and the Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan were honoured to welcome the Mayor of Colombo, Vraie Cally Balthazaar, as our special guest speaker.

Our members and guests enjoyed a thought-provoking presentation, gaining valuable insight into the daily challenges faced by the Mayor's Department, as well as the many successes being achieved across the city. Most importantly, we explored opportunities for RCCM to partner with the Colombo Municipal Council on meaningful community initiatives that will help make Colombo an even better place to live, work, and visit.

Thank you, Madam Mayor, for your openness, leadership, and inspiring discussion. We look forward to working together to create a lasting impact for our city.

A New Rotary Year Begins | 2026–2027

As we embark on another exciting Rotary year, the Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan proudly congratulates President Joevinie Machado on her installation as Club President for 2026–2027.

We wish Joevinie every success as she leads our club with passion, purpose, and a commitment to Service Above Self. We look forward to a year of meaningful projects, lasting impact, and continued fellowship.

A heartfelt thank you to our Immediate Past President, Nasser Majeed, for an outstanding year of leadership, dedication, and unwavering service. Your commitment has strengthened our club, fostered lasting friendships, and laid a strong foundation for the year ahead. We are deeply grateful for your contribution.

We were also honoured to welcome District Governor Kumar Sundaraj, whose presence made the occasion even more special as we officially commenced the 2026–2027 Rotary year. Thank you for your encouragement, inspiration, and continued support of our club and District.
