The Department of Meteorology - Sri Lanka, UN agencies, INGOs and civil society discussed preparedness to safeguard lives and livelihoods from adverse weather.

The United Nations Sri Lanka briefed the Parliament of Sri Lanka's Climate Caucus on El Niño's impacts on agriculture, food security and livelihoods in the country.

Thank you to the co-chairs and members for your strong engagement on anticipatory preparedness.

With global predictions pointing to a strong El Niño, FAO Sri Lanka together with UNDP Sri Lanka and WFP Sri Lanka shared practical steps to protect harvests, water, fisheries, livestock and food security.

But the threats are shared and borderless: illegal fishing, trafficking, pollution, and a changing climate. No country can meet them alone.

By ratifying the Agreement and helping bring it into force this year, Sri Lanka helped secure the first comprehensive legal protection for the high seas. This cooperation, put into practice, is how we safeguard our waters and our future.

Vital.

One word for what the United Nations delivered this year.

In a world of turbulence, division and uncertainty, the work went on. Across continents and crises, in the hardest places, the women and men who serve under the UN flag kept delivering, often saving lives.

The numbers tell part of the story:

→ 98 million people reached with humanitarian assistance and protection

→ 40 special political missions and 11 peacekeeping operations sustaining the pursuit of peace

→ 56,000 survivors of torture and their families supported across 93 countries

→ $981 million in efficiencies reported across the UN system under the UN80 initiative.

And behind every number are people. Communities warned before the storm. Nations resolving disputes through law rather than force. A promise, made in the Charter and renewed in the Pact for the Future, kept alive for another year.

The United Nations will always stand as a beacon of hope and help as we work with the countries of the world to build trust, spur sustainable development and pursue the peace, prosperity and progress that people everywhere need and deserve.

She said that while signs of accountability and reform were welcome, more was needed.
