The Goethe-Institut is pleased to welcome Reclaim.lk & Delete Nothing to our space for their upcoming discussion on "Platform Accountability".
Social media platforms profit off a global user base, but their safeguards don’t protect everyone equally. Despite the rapid innovation of modern technology, the protections afforded to women and q***r communities in the Global South, remain culturally insensitive. While laws and tech companies’ community guidelines focus on the nature of the content that is shared or exposed such as sexually explicit material, they often overlook culturally specific ways ordinary content is weaponized to cause harm, such as a picture of a woman without her hijab or a picture of a q***r individual whose identity or relationships may be exposed without consent. Through curated community dialogues and targeted social media campaigns the project aims to redefine online safety by moving beyond a narrow focus on harmful content and towards a consent based approach. Rather than asking only whether something shared online meets existing definitions of abuse, it explores whether individuals had control over the use, exposure, and interpretation of their identities and personal information.
Through curated discussions, reclaim.lk attempts to bring this discourse into community spaces.
