What happens when young people don’t just learn about democracy—but question it?

The room was filled with questions, conversations, different perspectives and plenty of thinking during Session 02 of the Active Youth Program – Phase 06!

Together with Prof. Athulasiri Samarakoon, our participants explored The U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights—from rights and freedoms to the separation of powers, checks and balances, and the institutions designed to protect democracy.

And these photos tell part of the story.

This is what we want the Active Youth Program to be:

💡 A space to THINK.
🗣️ A space to QUESTION.
🤝 A space to DISCUSS.
🌍 And a space to grow into informed and responsible young leaders.

Because leadership isn’t only about having a voice. It’s also about understanding rights, responsibilities, institutions and the power structures that shape our societies.

Every right we enjoy today has a story behind it.

Some were won through peaceful protest. Others through courageous leadership, legal reform, and generations of advocacy.

In Session 06 of the Active Youth Program – Phase 05, participants explored "Civil Rights and Constitutional Expansion," facilitated by Dr. Akalanka Thilakarathne.

Together, they examined how civil rights have evolved, how constitutions adapt to protect freedoms, and why justice, equality, and accountable institutions remain essential to every democracy.

The session encouraged participants to think critically about the relationship between rights, responsibilities, and active citizenship.

It’s official—Active Youth Program Batch 06 has begun!

We’re excited to welcome another incredible group of young leaders to the Active Youth Program – Phase 06, delivered by IYAP in collaboration with the American Center Colombo and the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka.

Our journey started with an inspiring first session, “The American Democratic Experiment: Origins and Constitutional Foundations,” facilitated by Prof. Maneesha Pasqual.

What makes this even more special? While Batch 05 continues its 20-week journey, Batch 06 has now started too—meaning even more young people are learning, growing, and leading together.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Here’s to another 20 weeks of meaningful conversations, new friendships, and leadership in action!

What if changing your community starts with one simple decision—to serve?

During Session 05 of the Active Youth Program – Phase 05, participants explored Volunteerism as Civic Leadership: Serving Others. Leading Change., facilitated by Thirukumar Premakumar, Executive Director of the International Youth Alliance for Peace (IYAP).

Through inspiring stories, interactive activities, and meaningful discussions, participants reflected on how volunteerism builds stronger communities, develops future leaders, and empowers ordinary people to create extraordinary impact.

Chapter V | Session Design & Training Methodologies

Great leaders don't just deliver sessions—they create learning experiences that inspire, engage, and transform.

During Session 05 of the Catalyst Youth Leadership Program, facilitated by Mr. Vijayanathan Thusandra, participants explored the art and science of designing impactful training sessions that place learners at the heart of every experience.

From defining learning objectives and structuring engaging sessions to selecting the right methodologies, activities, and evaluation tools, participants discovered that effective facilitation is about creating environments where learning becomes meaningful and lasting.

Every participant left with a simple but powerful realization:

People may forget what was taught, but they will always remember how they felt while learning.

Our sincere appreciation to Mr. Vijayanathan Thusandra for sharing his expertise and to American Corner Batticaloa for hosting another inspiring session that continues to empower the next generation of community leaders.

Chapter III | Facilitation Skills & Public Speaking

Great leaders don't just have ideas—they know how to communicate them with confidence, purpose, and impact.

During Session 03 of the Catalyst Youth Leadership Program, participants strengthened their facilitation, public speaking, communication, and presentation skills through interactive learning, group discussions, practical exercises, and peer engagement.

Every confident speaker was once a nervous beginner. This session reminded us that leadership is not about speaking the loudest—it's about creating conversations that inspire action and empower others.

Congratulations to our Catalyst youth leaders for stepping outside their comfort zones, finding their voices, and taking another step towards becoming confident community leaders.

A heartfelt thank you to Corner Batticaloa for hosting this inspiring learning experience and for its continued commitment to empowering young leaders.
