National Scout Media Unit - Sri Lanka

National Scout Media Unit - Sri Lanka Official Media body of Sri Lanka Scout Association Scouting was started in Sri Lanka 100 years ago in 1912, initiated by a British colonial civil engineer Mr. F.

G Stevens, then residing in the Matale. Within a few years the movement spread to other parts of the island such as Kandy, Colombo, Galle and Jaffna. By 1945, when Mr.Stevens left the Island, branch associations had been opened in 20 districts. The first Sri Lankan Jamboree was held in Colombo in 1959. This was followed by several other Jamborees held in Colombo(1962), Anuradapura (1983), Kurunag

ala(1991), Kandy (1998), Galle-Balapitiya (2001), Nuwara Eliya (2006) , and Hambantota(2008) , Dambulla(2012). In addition to these national Jamborees, held as far as possible at intervals of four Years, the Association also staged a SAARC Jamboree in 1990 with the participation of several National Associations in the Indian sub-continent, known as the First SAARC Jamboree. Sri Lanka Scouting which was open only to Boys , opened to the girls in 2006. By 2012, Girls in Scouting had a membership of 5500 including leaders and had by then enjoyed camping experience having attended two national Jamborees and also taken part in 3 foreign friendship camps in Bhutan, Bangladesh and India.
