IC 1101: The Giant Among Galaxies
IC 1101 is one of the biggest galaxies ever discovered, sitting nearly a billion light-years away in the Virgo constellation. It’s unbelievably huge, stretching around 4 million light-years across — more than 40 times wider than our own Milky Way. Inside it are trillions of stars, along with a supermassive black hole hidden deep at its center. Scientists believe IC 1101 became this enormous by slowly merging with many smaller galaxies over billions of years. Each collision added more stars, gas, and mass, helping it grow into the cosmic giant we see today. Galaxies this large are extremely rare, which is why IC 1101 is so fascinating to astronomers. By studying it, scientists can better understand how galaxies evolve and just how massive structures in the universe can truly become.
