Women's Education & Research Centre (WERC)

Women's Education & Research Centre (WERC) Vision: Striving for Gender Equality & Equity 1982 saw the inauguration of this organisation as the Women’s Education Centre (WEC).

It was founded by a small group of feminist researchers and activists to highlight the status of women in the country and to publish material, which could be used by women in their struggle for liberation. The broad objectives of WEC were to increase women’s awareness, their resources and opportunities for effective participation in the economic, political and social life of the country. Since the

n WERC has been broadening its horizons and has made a foray into research on women's issues. Consequently, in 1991, reflecting the introduction of this aspect into its programmes, the organisation was renamed as Women's Education and Research Centre (WERC). WERC received financial support and funding from various organisations. We are a non-profit organisation and self-sustainability is at times a major problem. Therefore, continuous support from outside organisations is needed and welcomed for WERC to continue its work in striving to combat violence and discrimination against women and children on all levels - political, social, religious and economic - and to fight for comprehensive change in all spheres of social life.

Weaving Culture, Remembering Voices

The South Asia Conference 2025 – Gender and Heritage, hosted by the Women’s Education and Research Centre on the 21st and 22nd of November at Radisson Colombo, concluded successfully, supported by CREA - Feminist Opportunities Now (FON).

The Conference brought together academics, researchers, practitioners, and members of civil society from across the region - creating a meaningful space for dialogue, exchange, and collective reflection. It offered participants the opportunity to share ideas, challenge assumptions, and co-create new knowledge on the intersections of gender, culture, and heritage.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Farzana Haniffa of the University of Colombo, explored the theme against the backdrop of Sri Lanka's Muslim community setting the tone for the two-day conference. The presenters at the conference shared papers that spanned the South Asian region, exploring diverse cultural representations, heritage narratives, and identity formations, and examining their implications for gender justice and inclusivity. The conversations highlighted both common challenges and rich regional specificities, opening pathways for future collaborations and deeper inquiry.
