UNFPA Sri Lanka

UNFPA Sri Lanka The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the United Nations Sexual and Reproductive Health agency.

Ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights is our key priority. In Sri Lanka, we deliver this mandate based on principles of human rights and gender equality by advocating for rights-based gender responsive & transformative policies that enable the full realization of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. Achieving universal access to sexual and reproductiv

e health and rights is a key effort towards achieving the sustainable development goals. UNFPA’s efforts enable individuals, including young people in Sri Lanka, to develop these skills and acquire the knowledge and support needed to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives.

In a first time initiative in , Anticipatory Action Cash Assistance was provided to pregnant women in Gampaha, Wathupitiwala, and Negombo ahead of climate-related risks and extreme weather impacts related to the South-West Monsoon.

With support from the Government of Australia, over 25 pregnant women (36 weeks and above) admitted to hospitals received cash assistance to help cover urgent needs and support safer pregnancies during times of uncertainty.

As climate impacts intensify, ensuring pregnant women have the support they need, before emergencies escalate is critical to protecting maternal health and dignity.

Recovery looks different for everyone, especially for older women navigating the impacts of displacement, disrupted livelihoods, and ongoing uncertainty after .

UNFPA, supported by the Governments of Australia and New Zealand, and in partnership with HelpAge Sri Lanka, provided cash assistance to over 190 older women in the Badulla district.

For many older women, crises can deepen existing vulnerabilities, particularly when access to income, healthcare, mobility, and social support is disrupted. This assistance helps women meet urgent daily needs, while supporting dignity, choice, and independence during recovery.

Because humanitarian response must ensure that older persons, especially older women are not left behind.

Midwives are more than birth attendants, they are critical frontline responders, especially in humanitarian settings.

They prevent unintended pregnancies, support survivors of gender-based violence, provide essential sexual and reproductive health services, and ensure safer births even in the most challenging conditions.

This International Day of the Midwife, we recognized their vital role and reaffirm the need to continue investing in them.

In Sri Lanka, UNFPA is partnering to strengthen and empower midwives to safeguard the health and dignity of mothers and newborns.
