NNAF (NGO National Action Forum), one of the UNDP GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) Operational Phase VII projects in the Colombo wetlands, working in Kaduwela, Malabe area, organized the foundation stone laying ceremony for the ‘Bojunhala’ with the participation of 38 active women’s groups on 25 Jul 2025. Early in the morning, some women prepared the land for the ceremony, while others arranged refreshments. At the auspicious time, as the priests chanted pirith, selected government officials laid the foundation stone. The ceremony concluded with a tea party.

The UNDP Resident Representative in Sri Lanka, Ms Azusa Kubota, accompanied by the UNDP-GEF-SGP National Coordinator Ms Thanuja Dharmasena and her team, visited key project sites of Human Development Foundation Sri Lanka (HDFSL) organisation, including the cleaned Heen Ela canal and restored paddy lands on 23 July 2025. The visit highlighted the positive impact of the canal restoration on local farming, with farmers expressing appreciation for flood prevention efforts. A community meeting followed, showcasing collaborative work between HDFSL, LGM (Lanka Good Market), and the Halpita community. In a heartfelt gesture, the community celebrated the UNDP RR’s birthday with a symbolic milk rice cake. The visit also included tours of local stalls, a home garden, and the LGM factory, ending with a group photo and a gift of locally grown fruits.

SURAKSHI facilitated a one-day Excel course at the Sri Lanka Federation of University Women (SLFUW) on December 28, 2024. The training was organized for UNDP/GEF/SGP Colombo grantees and their staff, focusing on managing projects, budgets, and data for small-scale projects.

Surakshi is a Non-Governmental Organisation that focuses on conservation of the environment with a special focus on women’s participation. Surakshi specialises in Knowledge Management and Capacity Building. Surakshi is member of the Sri Lanka Nature Forum (SLNF ), the UNDP Global Environment Facility (GEF) network of NGOs and member of the Vikasha network of Womens’ organizations.
Surakshi was one of the first organizations to provide Knowledge Management and Capacity Building requirements to the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) Sri Lanka programme. The first grant was provided in 2011 and concluded in 2013. Surakshi also provided the same services to the GEF/SGP MAP/CBA programme from 2013 – 2014.
Surakshi has once again been awarded a grant for Knowledge Management and Capacity Building for Operational Phase 6 (2017 - 2020) of the GEF SGP Sri Lanka programme. The project will focus on the Colombo Urban Wetlands landscape.
Surakshi has gained experience in;
a) Building community capacity in addressing GEF focal area issues of biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, chemical use and international waters through awareness and skill building programmes
b) Building capacities of communities to adapt to climate change, including community awareness raising of climate related risks and coping strategies
c) Facilitation in the implementing of projects that focus on low-cost and sustainable climate change adaptation methods and technologies
d) Building close links with local government authorities in particular with the Divisional Secretariat, Departments of Agriculture/Agrarian Services, Irrigation, Coast Conservation Department etc.
e) Fostering community participation and commitment to development and environmental protection initiatives on a sustainable basis.
