When destroyed community water systems across Sri Lanka, families were left without safe and reliable water.

With support from the Government of Japan, UNICEF helped rehabilitate 29 community-based water supply schemes, restoring access to safe water for hundreds of families and helping communities recover and rebuild.

This support was part of the United Nations Sri Lanka Humanitarian Priorities Plan, activated to respond to the immediate needs of communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

After losing so much during , these weren't just school supplies. They were a chance to return to learning with confidence and hope.

When Meena*'s daughter experienced abuse, one call for help set something much bigger in motion.

Healthcare workers, law enforcement, probation and child protection officers, legal aid, psychosocial support... Together, they activated the continuum of child-friendly services to ensure one thing: that Meena's daughter is supported to recover safely, continue her education, access justice, and remain where she belonged - with her family. ❤️

With support from UNICEF Australia, we are working with the Government of Sri Lanka to strengthen this coordinated child protection system, helping frontline professionals respond quickly, work together and put every child's best interests first.

UNICEF Sri Lanka was proud to be part of the Centenary Celebration of 100 Years of Community Health in Sri Lanka, held this morning alongside the Ministry of Health - Sri Lanka, WHO Sri Lanka and partners, with His Excellency President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in attendance.

At the heart of the celebration were UNICEF’s interactive exhibition stalls, developed with the Family Health Bureau and Health Promotion Bureau. The stalls highlighted UNICEF’s long-standing support to improve maternal and child health in Sri Lanka - from promoting healthy pregnancies through preconception care, to supporting caregivers and creating nurturing environments where children can grow and thrive.

Together, we remain committed to building a healthier future for every child. 💙

At just 3 years, Pasindu from Dehiattakandiya has spent much of his young life battling severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and other serious health conditions.

After , accessing lifesaving treatment became difficult. Through the United Nations Sri Lanka Humanitarian Priorities Plan and the generous support of the Government of Cyprus, UNICEF helped children like Pasindu receive BP-100 therapeutic food alongside other support such as transportation to attend clinics so they are able to access regular nutrition services. These interventions ensured they could continue the care they required.

“We feel hopeful now. He is eating better and we can see him improving little by little,” Pasindu's grandmother says.

The long journey to care no longer feels out of reach for Pasindu's family, who are now able to attend clinics regularly and stay on track with his treatment. © UNICEF/2026/CERI
