The conversation continues, this time, with the Prime Minister.

Launched yesterday for World Mental Health Day, On My Mind was presented to the Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya today by the youth group which worked on translating the content into Sinhala and Tamil languages, together with UNICEF Representative Emma Brigham.

The youth group also shared a candid conversation with the Prime Minister, where young people shared their perspectives on mental health and the importance of creating more space for open, honest conversations.

Because mental health conversations should include young people, their experiences and the things that matter to them. 💬

UNICEF today joined the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and partners for Policy Day, marking the start of National Children’s Week in the lead-up to National Children’s Day on 1 October.

The day brought together government partners and stakeholders to discuss preventing violence against children in all settings and strengthening systems that protect and support children.

The workshop also highlighted the draft Rehabilitation and Reintegration Policy for children in conflict with the law, which aims to expand alternatives to formal justice processes, favouring appropriate and proportionate measures that support rehabilitation and help children return to their families, communities and education.

Formulation of the Rehabilitation and Reintegration Policy is being supported by UNICEF via the Support to Justice Sector (JURE) project funded by the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, implemented together with the Ministry of Justice and UNDP Sri Lanka.

Everyone has a role to play in climate resilience. 🌱💙

For children, disaster preparedness can make the difference between being able to continue learning safely and days/weeks of learning disruption.

UNICEF is working with the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka, principals, teachers and education officials to help schools identify climate risks early and plan for them before they become emergencies.

At a pilot workshop with 21 schools in the Southern, Western and North Western provinces, participants yesterday mapped the risks their schools face and developed practical plans to protect learning and keep children safe.

Climate resilient schools mean making sure children can keep learning, even when their communities face climate shocks.

Colombo was the starting point, with Kandy and Anuradhapura next, bringing the climate-smart schools initiative to 63 schools nationwide.

Here in , we’re working with the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka to make learning more accessible for children who use sign language, with multiple options including digital textbooks with sign language support and training for teachers to use them.

This , we’re reminded why this work matters – because every child should have the opportunity to learn, communicate, participate and be heard.

Probation officers from across Sri Lanka came together for a technical consultation to share practical approaches to case management and data collection on cases releating to children who come into contact with the law.

The aim is to strengthen how evidence is used to shape policies and decisions in the best interests of each child. The consultation also explored ways for probation offices to work more closely with the Legal Aid Commission, helping expand access to child-friendly legal aid.

The consultation was facilitated through the Support to Justice Sector Project (JURE) funded by the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives and implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice - Sri Lanka, UNDP Sri Lanka and UNICEF.
