Every week, mothers and children visit this polyclinic in Eheliygoda in Sabaragamuwa province for growth monitoring, nutrition services, and pregnancy care. During a visit yesterday, UNICEF Sri Lanka Representative Ms Emma Brigham met with health workers who highlighted the challenge of changing nutrition behaviours, and the need for a multi-sectoral approach that goes beyond the Ministry of Health alone.

We are supporting the Government of ensure every rupee spent, truly supports better nutrition outcomes for our children & families.

Today, UNICEF, supported by the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, together with Scaling Up Nutrition Movement and Finance Capacity Development Platform for SUN Countries (FCDP) partnered with key government ministries on a high-level policy dialogue to strengthen nutrition financing.

Right now, Sri Lanka’s National Nutrition Policy (2021–2030) sets out strong goals to improve the health and wellbeing of our communities. To turn those goals into real action, we need to clearly understand how much money is being spent on nutrition, across all sectors including health, education, agriculture & social protection.

Over the next two days experts and government focal points will work together to:
💙Create a simple, standard way to classify and identify all nutrition-related spending.
💙Build capacity among ministries to *tag and track* their nutrition budgets more accurately.
💙Understand where investments happen and where more support is needed.
💙Develop clear guidelines for upcoming budget cycles, ensuring nutrition stays a priority in financial planning.

Across Sri Lanka, Public Health Midwives play an essential role in supporting families; from providing guidance to newly married couples, to guiding parents through pregnancy, birth, and the earliest years of a child’s life. Their care, comfort and commitment help give every mother and baby the strongest possible start.

UNICEF is proud to support these quiet heroes, by strengthening their capacity building, supporting their mental well-being, and improving the clinics and community spaces where they work. Join the global call for 🩵
