A Call for Action
Every day we hear of something good, bad and ugly happening to women.
A good thing happened when after long years of activism – Sri Lanka has the lowest percentage of women legislators in South Asia – a 25% quota was legislated for women’s representation at the local government level. D-Day is 10th February 2018.
The Department of Census and Statistics says that employers in the private sector are reluctant to recruit women. Why? Because they have domestic responsibilities, and, therefore, may not be good workers.
Then of course there is the violence that women are subjected to almost on a daily basis. Not every incident gets media coverage or gets reported to law enforcement authorities. But nevertheless it happens. And worse, that violence is justified. Recently a very responsible Minister, referring to the r**e of a tourist, is reported to have said that she should not have gone alone with the local man. If women do so and get r**ed, of course then it is their fault.
