MAG SRI LANKA

MAG SRI LANKA SAVES LIVES BUILDS FUTURES MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organization operating in more than 30 countries across the globe.

The primary task of MAG is to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance from contaminated land and release land back to the beneficiaries through the government authorities. Since setting up operations in 2002 in Sri Lanka, MAG has been actively involved in locating and clearing landmines and other unexploded ordnance in the war-afflicted areas of the island. Over the years, MAG has gained recogniti

on and accreditation from the government of Sri Lanka to support the task of landmine clearance and to realize Sri Lanka’s goal of becoming a mine-free nation. We abide by our core values (Determined / Expert / Integrity / Compassion / Inclusive) and give equal opportunities to people from all genders, Religions, and races. Gender quality is greatly valued at MAG and we believe in empowering female staff who can bring a greater change in the society. It has been more than two decades since the culmination of war but many Sri Lankans are unaware of the fact that there are many active landmines and UXOs still remain uncleared in contaminated land. Our community liaison team reaches out to families living in remote villages of the North & East to locate landmines with the support of the community. Most of the civilians living in the north & east are farmers who are mainly involved in agriculture and livestock development. Systematic demining and releasing land back to the beneficiaries greatly enables them to be financially steady. We are extremely thankful to all our international donors, partners, and stakeholders who support and encourage our activities in Sri Lanka, Through the generous funds of our donors we are able to continuously carry out field operational work and staff capacity building which are an integral part of our program in Sri Lanka. Also, we would like to thank the valuable workforce of MAG Sri Lanka, each one’s contribution has paved the path towards our success.

During his visit to MAG’s demining operations in Mundru Murippu, Mullaitivu District, the Australian High Commissioner reaffirmed Australia’s strong support and solidarity with humanitarian mine action efforts in Sri Lanka.

Witnessing firsthand the dedication and professionalism of MAG’s field teams, he commended the life-changing impact of their work in clearing contaminated land and restoring safe access for communities affected by conflict. He highlighted that humanitarian demining is essential not only for saving lives, but also for enabling sustainable development, strengthening livelihoods, and supporting long-term economic recovery across the Northern Province.

“Australia stands with MAG and the communities you serve,” he stated, expressing sincere appreciation to all staff and reaffirming Australia’s continued commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s journey towards a mine-free future.

AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER’S VISIT TO MAG - 12 May 2026

MAG had the pleasure of hosting the Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Matthew Duckworth, along with First Secretary Xin Shi, Senior Research Officer Sylvester Worthington, and Program Officer Nathali Fernando, at our demining site in Mundru Murippu - Mullaitivu District, the most heavily contaminated district in Sri Lanka.

The support provided by the Government of Australia has significantly contributed to MAG’s efforts to clear contaminated land and return safe land to civilians living in war-affected areas of Sri Lanka. This partnership continues to help restore safety, livelihoods, and hope to communities rebuilding their lives after decades of conflict.

Sri Lanka is steadily progressing towards clearing all remaining landmines and explosive remnants of war. These indiscriminate weapons continue to threaten the safety of civilians and hinder resettlement and development in affected areas of the country.

To date, MAG has cleared more than 103.18 square kilometres of land and removed 116,581 explosive ordnances from contaminated areas. However, approximately 21.38 square kilometres of land still remain to be cleared in order to achieve a “Landmine-Free Sri Lanka.”

MAG would like to sincerely thank the Government of Australia and the Australian High Commission in Sri Lanka for their continued support of our humanitarian mine action work. Their contribution continues to save lives and help build a safer future for communities across Sri Lanka.

ஆஸ்திரேலிய அரசாங்கம் வழங்கி வரும் ஆதரவு, மாசடைந்த நிலங்களை சுத்திகரித்து அவற்றை பாதுகாப்பான நிலங்களாக மாற்றி, போரால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பகுதிகளில் வாழும் பொதுமக்களிடம் மீண்டும் ஒப்படைக்கும் MAG அமைப்பின் மனிதாபிமான பணிகளுக்கு பெரிதும் துணைபுரிந்துள்ளது. இந்த கூட்டாண்மை, பல ஆண்டுகால மோதல்களுக்குப் பின்னர் தங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை மீண்டும் கட்டியெழுப்பும் சமூகங்களுக்கு பாதுகாப்பையும் நம்பிக்கையையும் வாழ்வாதாரத்தையும் மீட்டுத்தருகிறது.

இதுவரை MAG, 103.18 சதுர கிலோமீட்டர் பரப்பளவிலான நிலங்களை சுத்திகரித்து, மாசடைந்த பகுதிகளில் இருந்து 116,581 வெடிபொருட்களை அகற்றியுள்ளது. இருப்பினும், “கண்ணிவெடி இல்லா இலங்கை” என்ற இலக்கை அடைய இன்னும் சுமார் 21.38 சதுர கிலோமீட்டர் நிலப்பரப்பு சுத்திகரிக்கப்பட வேண்டியுள்ளது.

The Staff Transition Unit of MAG has been consistently supporting staff through skills development training and exposure visits, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of evolving industry trends and demands.

As part of the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry training programme, staff participated in an industry-focused exposure visit organized with the support of the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Animal Production and Health, and the Department of Rural Industries. This initiative provided participants with valuable firsthand experience of the commercial aspects of these sectors.

International Francophonie Day 2026, an event organized by the French Embassy in Sri Lanka to celebrate the richness of Francophone culture and its global connections. The occasion brought together diplomats, development partners, cultural stakeholders, and distinguished guests, serving as a platform to reaffirm the enduring relationship between France and Sri Lanka.

The event highlighted the deep-rooted cultural ties that have developed between the two countries over many years, particularly in the fields of art, language, education, and heritage. International Mine Awareness Day, officially known as the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, is observed every year on April 4. It was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the dangers of landmines and explosive remnants of war, and to promote efforts toward their eradication. This day highlights the devastating impact these hidden hazards have on communities, particularly in countries affected by conflict, where civilians especially children are often the most vulnerable.

Landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to pose a serious threat long after wars have ended. They contaminate farmland, restrict access to water and education, and hinder economic recovery. For many survivors, injuries caused by these explosives lead to lifelong disabilities, requiring continuous medical care, rehabilitation, and social support. International Mine Awareness Day serves as a reminder of the importance of clearing contaminated land and providing assistance to victims so they can rebuild their lives with dignity.

போர்கள் முடிந்த பிறகும் நிலைமைன்கள் மற்றும் வெடிக்காத வெடிப்பொருட்கள் (unexploded ordnance) இன்னும் மனிதர்களின் உயிருக்கும் வாழ்வாதாரத்திற்கும் பெரிய அச்சுறுத்தலாகவே உள்ளன. அவை விவசாய நிலங்களை மாசுபடுத்துகின்றன, குடிநீர் மற்றும் கல்வி போன்ற அத்தியாவசிய வசதிகளுக்கான அணுகலைக் குறைக்கின்றன, மேலும் பொருளாதார முன்னேற்றத்தையும் கடுமையாக பாதிக்கின்றன. இந்த வெடிப்புகளால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள் பலரும் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் உடல் ஊனமுற்றவர்களாக மாறுகின்றனர்; இதனால் தொடர்ந்து மருத்துவ சிகிச்சை, மறுவாழ்வு சேவைகள் மற்றும் மனநல ஆதரவு தேவைப்படுகிறது.

IMPORTANCE OF NON TECHNICAL SURVEY...............................................................................................
The discussions with the community would be solely based on the impacts caused by the civil war (landmines and explosive Ordnance). We usually collect information about suspected hazardous areas through questionnaires and verbal discussions. Based on the information that we receive from the village head or informer; we will collect details about the people who frequently visit high-risk areas for their livelihood activities. We would then meet them in person to get further details about the location where the suspected objects could be found.

We would meet the people concerned individually and in groups and explain the seriousness and danger that they may face by going to the risky areas and would inform them of our willingness (the workers and the organization) to help them through our clearance activities. We would also obtain very clear information and data from them about the history of the war that took place in that area. Our discussion will make them feel confident and enable us to collect data about the hazardous areas and eventually, we will be able to get their consent to join us to show the suspected locations where landmines could be found in fields and forest areas.

At the convenience of the informer, we will fix a date and visit the location; we will not impose any conditions on them during the journey. We would use commonly used roads during our journey to ensure the safety of our team and the people we take with us (those who give information). We set out correctly equipped to gather information and record route to & location of reported items as witnessed from a safe location. We will perform our duties according to the rules and regulations of our organization and Community Liaison standard operating procedure (SOP). We will save data through a GPS tracking system and cameras, following the inspection visit we will leave the location in a safe manner and return to our base.

We will process all the data collected during the visit, update our Community Liaisons database, and then discuss further with our Community Liaison Manager our next step and approach. After a series of inspections and follow-up visits, having confirmed the presence of explosive ordnance, we will come to a conclusive decision. We will visit the hazardous area once again with the SLE and SLA to review the risks associated with the place. Thus, the field activities to identify and mark the hazardous area are concluded in this manner, we will inform the civilian who lives in the vicinity of the location about the risk involved and restrict the usage of uncleared areas where the possible threat is found.
