Another beautiful New Year dawned on Saara nilla!
We are brimful with gratitude for being able to celebrate our third Sinhala and Tamil new year together! 🌞🌻🪔🤗

The morning began with games, laughter, a cup of garden grown Kola Kanda and a dreamy nibble of kithul hakuru. Gift giving followed and an Avurudu feast prepared by our volunteer moms and Mr P- who hadn't slept a wink the night before for stringing buntin and making vats of Saara nilla ginger beer! 🧉🍵🫚🍌

Our community and staff poured magic into the day to make it memorable for the little children registered with our Reading Room and our older children who remain connected to the Saara nilla ecosystem. 🦋🐝🌸😊

This day would not have been possible, if not for the ever supportive friends and community of Saara nilla, always watching over us and stepping in whenever support is most needed. ❤️🌱💪🏾🤸🏾‍♀️

A BIG thank you to everyone who helped organise such an uplifting day! 🫶🏾🫂💐✨

Friends, if you feel curious or find yourselves loose-ending in Colombo Tomorrow (21st.) Please visit our garden. Drown in greenery, slow down, have a cool drink and browse pre- loved and a few hot off the press things: we are being deliberately secretive. 😉😉😉🤫🤫😚😚😘

Saara nilla is to launch a small range of products as we tee up to a long collaboration between our sewing group and Slow fashion, Sri lanka. 🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🐌🦋🦋🌻🌻🌻🎊🌸🌸🌸🪁🪁🪁🐝🐞🌼

Wishing you a happy, healthy, and abundant 2026 from the Saara nilla community 🌱

As January 2026 bloomed with fresh blossoms from our garden, new ideas in the reading room, and delicious, nourishing meals from our kitchen, we look back with deep gratitude at the wonderful people we met, the experiences gained, and the activities we were part of in 2025.

In November, the Saara nilla Lunch Club celebrated three years of activity! A day packed with variety - from a library session on stamp collections and understanding the post with stealth education supremo Anusha Bastian , to songs, dancing, and recitation on the verandah hosted by Buddheesha Pahathkumbura and her rattle microphone. Shirin Akbar (Lime Tree Yoga) and Prashani Abeydeera led yoga, mindfulness, and a hypnotic taster of vibrational singing bowls, followed by a garden-grown lunch of cabbage roti, murunga/peanut fry, sweet potato cutlets, egg masala curry, and hibiscus squash 🌻💞💥

December 2025 brought even more joy and exuberance than ever before, with volunteer mums, Mr P, our Manager Thusitha Dombagammana, and volunteer teachers closing the year with inspired reading room activities for the children.

🍃 A spinny blizzard of crafting filled Saara nilla in preparation for Christmas. 💫 We fundraised for an oven and baked ourselves silly for our Christmas party on the 20th of December, paving the way for future cake - baking and bread-making workshops, Mālu pān, and bunis after weekday sessions. We are deeply grateful to Per Christian Revholt and Siv for their generosity. Led by Ruvi Perera and Thusitha Jayasundera, the bakery was off to a flying start with a tropical Yule log and brownies, decorated by volunteer mums and children 🌸🎊

Christmas party morning began with planting edibles under Mr P’s guidance, followed by an indoor session with Dilrua de Soysa and our Head Librarian, Anuri De Silva. Our Christmas Party 2025 was meant to be small and reflective, but became anarchic, exuberant, and full-hearted. 🌸💫
