Cannabis or "Kansa" has been a core ingredient for Sri Lankan Indigenous Medicine "Ayurveda". It was initially criminalised under The Poisons, O***m and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance of 1935. However, The Ayurveda Act (Act No. 31 of 1961 as amended by Act No. 5 of 1962) allows ayurvedic physicians to obtain cannabis for their medicinal preparations.
Throughout the world, cannabis consumption for medicinal and recreational purposes are being made legal due to recent research revelations. In Sri Lanka, cannabis cultivation, consumption and possession is criminalised under the current law. Therefore we do not encourage any such illegal activities. National Cannabis Association Sri Lanka has been established to help create sensible laws for consumption of medical cannabis and to educate the society on the medicinal properties, nutrients and other benefits from consumption of CBD and THC. To create sensible laws, we must first educate and spread awareness.
