May Day Message
On this May Day, we honour the dignity of labour and the enduring value of collective strength. As members of the Open University Teachers Association, we remain committed to safeguarding the rights, welfare, and professional integrity of our academic community, in line with the principles set out in our Constitution.
In history, May Day has often been symbolised by the hammer and sickle in red, representing the struggles and contributions of physical labour. However, May Day is not only for those engaged in physical labour. As academics, we contribute through intellectual effort and the rigorous application of knowledge. Our work, too, represents dedication and hard work, and it is equally deserving of recognition on this day.
At the same time, May Day should not be reduced to a political platform. When it becomes a display of political divisions, the true purpose of protecting employee rights is weakened. Instead, we must use this occasion to reaffirm our unity as a trade union—standing together with clarity and purpose to defend and advance our collective rights.
May this day remind us of the importance of unity, responsibility, and continued commitment to our profession and to each other.
Wishing you all a meaningful and reflective May Day.
