Here are a few facts about the amazing sharks that can be found in the waters of Sri Lanka.

According to the Shark Fisheries Management Regulations, 2015, made under the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act, no person engaged in fishing operations in Sri Lankan waters or on the high seas shall catch any of the shark species listed here.

Join Ocean Rosy in supporting the conservation of sharks, rays, and chimeras in Sri Lanka. Through awareness and education, we aim to highlight the importance of protecting these remarkable species and the marine ecosystems they call home.

Congratulations, Maleesha P. Herath
We are delighted to congratulate Maleesha P. Herath, our dedicated intern, Ocean Rosy Small Grant recipient 2025, and final-year student of the Department of Aquatic Bioresources, Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Maleesha has successfully completed her final-year project presentation titled “A Preliminary Study on Parasitic Diversity in Sharks and Rays of Sri Lanka.”

We sincerely appreciate the guidance and support provided by Prof. Erandi Pathirana, Head of the Department of Aquatic Bioresources, Faculty of Urban and Aquatic Bioresources, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, as the project supervisor, and Buddhi Maheshika Pathirana, Co-Founder of Ocean Rosy, as the co-supervisor of the project.

Wishing Maleesha continued success in her academic journey and future contributions to marine research and conservation.

Our team member, Savini Lakmali, a student in the Department of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Ocean University of Sri Lanka, presented our findings at Shark International 2026. Although such international exposure is highly important for the growth of Sri Lankan budding conservationists, opportunities of this nature are very limited for local university students due to the high costs associated with international conferences. Therefore, Ocean Rosy would like to sincerely thank the Sri Lanka Sub-Aqua Club and its President, Imran Yakoob, Gillian Nair from Tapro Treasurer, and Mario Gooneratne for their generous support to cover Savini’s conference attendance.

There is a common belief that consuming shark meat enhances lactation in pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. However, no study has yet been conducted to assess the prevalence of this belief. Hence, this presentation represents the preliminary phase of an island-wide survey aimed at gaining deeper insight into the issue. Moreover, there is no clear science-based evidence to support this belief, and shark meat also contains high levels of mercury. Therefore, we also intend to explore ways to redirect this belief toward shark conservation by highlighting the importance of protecting sharks through articles and informal discussions with consumers, as the majority of Sri Lankans are unaware of the threats these species face due to their low reproductive potential compared to many fish species that we consume. One important aspect of conservation is changing public attitudes and preferences that negatively affect species conservation.

On a special note, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Pushpitha Palliyaguruge, Head of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Ocean University of Sri Lanka, for providing immense support during the initial stages of this study conducted in the southern region, by facilitating permissions from the relevant authorities and helping make this study possible.

Congratulations to Maleesha P. Herath, a final-year student in the Department of Aquatic Bioresources at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka, on her very first international conference experience.

She presented her study, " The Importance of Monitoring Shark and Ray Processing Sites for Improved Conservation and Compliance in Sri Lanka," at the Shark International conference 2026, which was supervised by Prof. Erandi Pathirana co-authored by Lenin Indra De Silva.

Though she is interning with Ocean Rosy on a different project, Ocean Rosy was not involved in this study. Yet, we were delighted to support her by sponsoring her conference registration for several reasons. Firstly, the registration fees for international conferences are comparatively high and are often difficult for local university students to afford. Secondly, we believe her study is highly important for the conservation of shark species on the brink of extinction.

Despite our limited resources and facilities, we remain committed to supporting enthusiastic young local university students in pursuing their career goals, as the representation of local students in the international scientific arena is still very limited.

පොකිරිස්සන් ආශ්‍රිත ධීවර කර්මාන්තය ලංකාවේ නීති විරෝධී නොවේ. ගැටලුව ඇත්තේ බිත්තර ස්කන්ධයක් දරන ගැහැනු සතුන්, ධීවර දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව විසින් නිකුත් කර ඇති නියෝගවලට අනුව නියමිත දිගට අඩු කටු පොකිරිස්සන් සහ බාහිර කවචය නොමැති සතුන් (හැව අරින) ඇල්ලීම තහනම්ය. මේවාට අමතරව කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ඇල්ලීම තහනම් කාලද පවතී. සාමාන්‍යයෙන් පෙබරවාරි, සැප්තැම්බර් සහ ඔක්තෝබර් යන කාලවලදී කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ඇල්ලීම තහනම්ය. ඒ හැර පොකිරිස්සන් ආශ්‍රිත ධීවර කර්මාන්තය නීති විරෝධී නොවෙයි.
ජාත්‍යන්තර මට්ටමෙන් ගත් කල කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ඉතා ඉහළ වටිනාකමක් සහිත මුහුදු ආහාරයකි. කැරිබියානු අවට දූපත්, ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාව අවට දූපත්, බ්‍රසීලය, නිකරගුවා, ආසියාව සහ පැසිෆික් කලාපයේ ප්‍රදේශවල මෙය විහිදී යයි. වියට්නාමය සහ ඕස්ට්‍රේලියාව කටු පොකිරිස්සන් අපනයනය කරන රටවල් අතර ඉහළම සිටියි. සාමාන්‍යයෙන් රටවල් එකසිය හැටක පමණ කටු පොකිරිස්සන් වෙළෙඳාම පැතිරී ඇත. පණ ඇති කටු පොකිරිස්සන් සුඛෝපභෝගි මුහුදු ආහාරයක් ලෙස ඉතා ජනප්‍රියය. චීනය, වියට්නාමය හා සිංගප්පූරුව වැනි ආසියානු රටවල ඒ සඳහා ඉහළ ඉල්ලුමක් පවතී. බොහෝ රටවල කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ගහන වේගය සහ ඒ හා බැඳුණු ධීවර කර්මාන්තය, කළමනාකරණයක් නොමැතිකමින් අභාවයට යමින් පවතී. විශේෂයෙන් පැනමාව අවට සහ පැසිෆික් සාගරය අවට කලාපවල ධීවර කර්මාන්තය අභාවයට යමින් පවතී. එයට එක් හේතුවක් වන්නේ ඉතා විශාල ලෙස කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ඇල්ලීම සහ එම වෙළෙඳාමේ නියාමනයක් නොවීමය. මේ හේතුවෙන් දිගුකාලීන තිරසර, කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ආශ්‍රිත ධීවර කර්මාන්තය යම්කිසි අවදානමකට ලෝක මට්ටමෙන් පත්ව ඇත.
සාමාන්‍යයෙන් කටු පොකිරිස්සන් අවුරුද්ද පුරාම දක්නට ලැබුණද මුහුද රළු මෝසම් කාලවලදී බහුතරයක් ධීවරයෝ කර්මාන්තයේ නොයෙදෙන නිසා එම කාලයේදී කටු පොකිරිස්සන් අස්වැන්නෙහි අඩුවක් දක්නට ඇත. මෝසම් කාල නොවන අගෝස්තු සහ මාර්තු මාසවල අස්වැන්න තරමක් ඉහළ යයි. පෙබරවාරි, මාසවලට කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ගොඩබෑමේ අඩුවක් දක්නට ඇති බව සැලකේ. එයට හේතුව වන්නේ පෙබරවාරි මාසයේදී කටු පොකිරිස්සන් සඳහා තහනම් මාසයක් බවට පත්ව තිබීමය. මාර්තු සහ නොවැම්බර් මාසවලදී වැඩිම ප්‍රමාණයක් වාර්තා වී ඇත.
සමස්තයක් ලෙස ගත් කල කටු පොකිරිස්සන් විශේෂ බොහොමයක් ගෝලීය වශයෙන් වඳ වීමේ තර්ජනයට ලක් වී ඇති බව හඳුනාගෙන නැත. එහෙත් ලංකාව අවට මුහුදු කලාපයෙහි ජීවත් වන විශේෂ කිහිපයක් දේශීය වශයෙන් අවදානමකට ලක්වන බව හඳුනාගෙන ඇත. නිවැරැදි කළමනාකරණයක් නොමැති වුවහොත් ඉදිරියේදී මේ අවදානම තවත් වර්ධනය වන බවක්ද නිරීක්ෂණය වී ඇත. අධික අස්වැන්නක් නෙළා ගැනීම වළක්වා ගැනීම සඳහා ඵලදායී කළමනාකරණයක් ඉතා වැදගත් වන්නේ මේ නිසාය.
පෙබරවාරි, සැප්තැම්බර් සහ ඔක්තෝබර් යන මාසවලදී කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ඇල්ලීම තහනම්ය. එසේ තහනම් වුවත් ඇතැම් ධීවරයන් ගැඹුරු මුහුදට එළන දැල්වලට අතිරේක අස්වැන්නක් ලෙස කටු පොකිරිසන් හසුවෙයි. බොහෝ ධීවරයන් දැලට හසුවන කටු පොකිරිස්සන් නැවතත් මුහුදටම මුදාහැරියද, ඇතැම් ධීවරයන් තහනම් කාලවලදී පවා අතිරේක අස්වැන්නක් ලෙස හසු වන කටු පොකිරිස්සන් විකිණීම සඳහා ගොඩබිමට රැගෙන එයි. එය උන්ගේ පැවැත්මට බරපතළ තර්ජනයක් මතුකරයි. වරාය නගරය සෑදූ පසුව පොකිරිස්සන් බෝවන ස්ථාන විනාශ වී ඇති බවත්, මුහුදේ දිය රළවල වෙනස්වීම හේතුවෙන් කටු පොකිරිස්සන් බිත්තර දමන ගල් වළවල් ආදිය වැලිවලින් යටව ගොස් ඇති බවත් ගල්කිස්ස, දෙහිවල හා අඟුලාන ආශ්‍රිතව ජීවත්වන ධීවර ප්‍රජාව චෝදනා කරති. මේ නිසා කොළඹ අවට බස්නාහිර පළාතේ කටු පොකිරිස්සන් ආශ්‍රිත ධීවර කර්මාන්තය යම් කඩා වැටීමකට ලක්ව ඇතැයිද ඔවුහු පෙන්වා දෙති.
පොකිරිස්සන් වගා කිරීම ලංකාවේ සිදු නොකරයි. ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් මුහුදු පතුලට එළන කරමල් දැල්වලින් පොකිරිස්සන් ඇල්ලීම සිදු කරයි. ඊට අමතරව ඔක්සිජන් සිලින්ඩර රහිතව (ස්කින් ඩයිවින්) මුහුදු පතුලට කිමිදී පොකිරිස්සන්ට උගුල් ඇටවීම මඟින් පොකිරිස්සන් ඇල්ලිම සිදුකරයි. ධීවර භාෂාවේදී එය හැදින්වෙන්නේ දැටි ගැසීම ලෙසයි.
සාමාන්‍යයෙන් පොකිරිස්සන් රාත්‍රි කාලයේදී සැගවී සිටින ගල්පර සහ කොරල් පරවලින් එළියට විත් ආහාර සොයා යෑම සිදු කරයි. එසේම දකුණු මුහුදු තීරයේ හක්බෙල්ලන් සහ විසිතුරු මසුන් ඇල්ලීම සදහා ඔක්සිජන් ටැංකි යොදාගෙන කිමිදීම සිදුකරයි. මේ හේතුවෙන් පොකිරිස්සන් සංරක්ෂණ සහ කළමණාකරණ ක්‍රියාමාර්ගයක් ලෙස හම්බන්තොට දිස්ත්‍රිකයේ ඔක්සිජන් ටැංකි යොදාගෙන රාත්‍රී කාලයේදී ධීවර කටයුතු සදහා කිමිදීම සම්පූර්ණයෙන් තහනම් කර ඇත. එය තිරසාර ධීවර කර්මාන්තයක් උදෙසා කාලෝචිත පියවරකි........

We are delighted to share our congratulations to Savini Lakmali , a brilliant Volunteer Research Assistant at Ocean Rosy and a student of the Ocean University of Sri Lanka, on attending Sharks International 2026 (May 2026) in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Ocean Rosy was pleased to support her participation in this important conference, and we are confident that she will gain valuable knowledge, exposure, and hands-on experience through this opportunity.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to two members from the Sri Lanka Sub-Aqua Club Gillian Nair from Tapro Treasures and Mario Gooneratne, who generously contributed toward covering part of the registration fee. The remaining cost was supported by Ocean Rosy.

A big thank you to these marine enthusiasts for standing with us in supporting women marine leaders and helping them build meaningful careers in marine science.
