Sharing moments from our first workshop of 🌿🐸
A project dedicated to empowering young leaders in to protect and care for our precious wetlands. This initiative is funded by Wetland Link International through their Small Grants Programme.

Through awareness, hands-on engagement, and a platform to voice ideas and concerns, we’re reconnecting youth with the wetlands they live alongside. This journey is about understanding, responsibility, and action. 💪

The workshop which took place at Beddagana Wetland Park followed a place-based approach led by Dr.Chethika Gunasiri and Ms.Narmadha Dangampola, grounding learning in real landscapes, lived experiences, and local ecological knowledge.

We were proud to have members from the Interact Club of Zahira College and the Interact Club of Colombo join hands with us. Together, we learned, explored, observed, cleaned, and reflected, turning curiosity into care and ideas into action.

What stood out most was the shared belief that real change begins with small, practical steps, led by young student leaders who care deeply about their city and its ecosystems. Together, we’re not just protecting wetlands , we’re nurturing future guardians. 💚

This World Wetlands Day, we’re sharing some of the precious moments from Colombo Wetland Guardians, a youth-empowering initiative by Love A Tree Foundation, supported by Wetland Link International through the WLI Small Grants Programme.

The project brings together young leaders from schools, universities, and youth clubs across Colombo’s urban wetland communities to learn, engage, and speak up for these vital ecosystems. Through clean-ups, biodiversity trails, group activities, and discussions led by Dr. Chethika Gunasiri and Ms. Narmadha Dangampola, youth are discovering how wetlands support biodiversity, secure water, and sustain livelihoods, and how communities continue to rely on them for food, culture, and identity in Colombo, a city built around wetlands.

By connecting with both the natural and cultural heritage of Colombo’s wetlands, these young leaders are becoming the next generation of stewards, inspired to protect, nurture, and celebrate these ecosystems so that the wetlands that have sustained our city for generations can continue to do so for the future.. ❤️

Our session of “Living in a Wetland Capital City” under the DIMO Lanka Lassana Hetak initiative welcomed students of Sri Siddhartha Maha Vidyalaya, Udahamulla into Diyasaru Park, where learning came alive through hands-on experience.

Guided by Ms Narmadha Dangampola from Greensphere Nature Studies, the students explored the park’s rich biodiversity, discovering the many plants, birds, and other creatures that make Colombo’s wetlands so unique. Many students shared that even though they lived nearby, they had never visited Diyasaru Park before and were excited to explore it for the first time. By the end of the session, several expressed how much they wanted to come back again to continue learning and observing nature.

It was inspiring to watch young minds connect with the environment, feel motivated to care for it, and gain a deeper appreciation for urban wetlands 💚 Moments like these remind us why we do what we do: nurturing curiosity, responsibility, and love for the natural world.
