The Samaritans in Sri Lanka

The Samaritans in Sri Lanka ‘The Samaritans’ is a non profit group of volunteers who strive to help the community

"The Samaritans in Sri Lanka" is a non-profit collective of volunteers, who are simply trying to make a difference in the community. Originally a neighborhood group that came together during the pandemic in 2020, to support people in the low-income bracket in Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia, Ratmalana, Boralesgamuwa, Piliyandala and Polgasowita areas, we have since grown in strength and numbers over the p

ast two years. We have now been able to reach many lower income villages out of Colombo as well (including Kilinochchi, Baddegama, Matara and Pottuvil). In addition to people in the very low income bracket, we also found that there are many lower middle-class and middle class families who have been thrown into a very bad financial state with the current crisis. These families are the ones unable to ask or beg for support and assistance. Thus, through our meal drives and various donation initiatives, we try to help these individuals too. Thanks to our donors and volunteers, we are also able to have special meal drives for children, in schools across the island. If you would like to learn more about The Samaritans, sponsor any of our projects or volunteer at our meal drives, please contact us via email at [email protected] or DM us on Instagram and/or Facebook.

The students of Elizabeth Moir volunteered with to spend sometime at Harward College in Dam Street.

They played cricket, decorated cookies, made bead chains.. it was such a lovely experience. A massive thank you to the teachers and students of Elizabeth Moir Senior School for truly going out of your way to make this a rewarding experience for their little kids.

Your gifts of school bags, bottles, lunch boxes and vouchers for school schools, not to mention the lunch packs and snacks, and of course the love and camaraderie shared between the children are truly appreciated and will not be forgotten.

We thank everyone who has placed their trust and faith in us throughout 2025 and the years gone by.

None of this would have been possible without your kindness and support. From meal drives to the egg bank, dry ration distributions to flood relief efforts, the Samaritans have done their very best to serve deserving communities and individuals.

A heartfelt thank you to our donors—corporates, individuals, families, and friends—for your continued encouragement and generosity. We remain committed to doing our very best in 2026 as well.

Wishing you all a Happy New Year and a blessed 2026. 🙌

The Samaritans continued their relief efforts for communities affected by the recent floods and cyclone, this time reaching Meegoda, Kolonnawa. We distributed dry-ration packs to families who were severely impacted by the disaster. In addition, 50 maternity packs were provided to pregnant women in need.

All recipients were carefully assessed to ensure that assistance reached those who were most affected.

None of this would be possible without the continued support of our donors, who have shown unwavering faith and trust in us over the years.

Thank you for standing with us.

During these challenging weeks of floods and cyclone recovery, the Samaritans have been working tirelessly to help affected families. Yet even in the midst of this crisis, our hearts have remained with the special needs children who depend on our support.

This season, we were grateful to once again provide dry-ration packs and lunch to 30 wonderful children and the amazing staff who devote themselves to their care. We will continue to walk beside them and support their needs in every way we can.

The Samaritans began distributing dry-ration packs in some of Colombo’s areas most severely affected by the recent floods. Welawatte and Wellampitiya—densely populated neighborhoods—were hit particularly hard, with floodwaters rising over five feet and destroying homes, belongings, and essential household items. Many families now have nothing left. As most residents are daily-wage earners, this disaster has created an immense hardship for them.

To ensure fairness and reach those most in need, our teams carried out a house-to-house distribution of ration packs.

Sri Lanka has endured a devastating week of cyclones and floods, causing widespread destruction that will take a long time to recover from. After waiting for conditions to stabilize, we have begun distributing dry rations to the most affected families and will continue supporting those in need in the days ahead. The Samaritans expresses gratitude to all donors—both corporate and individual—for their continued trust and support.
