This is so true. Please read below 🐾🙏🏼❤️
Sinhala New Year is here. And for our street animals, the celebrations have already begun to hurt. 😩
The sound of crackers is already echoing through the villages. Roadside stalls are stacked with them, and it will only get louder as the big day approaches.
For 5 seconds of dazzle and sparkle, animals and wildlife pay a devastating price. The sudden, explosive noise triggers sheer panic. Dogs bolt into traffic. Cats disappear for days. Birds abandon their nests. Wildlife flees into danger. Hearts literally give out from the shock and stress.
This is not about dampening the joy of Avurudu. It is about asking ourselves whether that joy needs to come at the cost of so much suffering. We believe it does not.
Please, this new year, take a stand. Do not buy firecrackers. Do not encourage them. Your kindness is a gift to every living creature around you.
Ways to help street animals stay safe:
🐕 Open a door - if there is a street dog or cat you know near your home, let them inside or into your compound during the noisiest hours. A small mercy that makes a huge difference.
📦 Create a quiet shelter - a cardboard box turned on its side in a corner, under a stairwell, behind a wall. Somewhere low, enclosed, away from the street. Animals instinctively seek small, dark spaces when frightened.
👀 Watch the roads - scared animals run blind. Drive slowly during and after fireworks. Check under your vehicle before moving. Many animals are injured this way every year.
💦 Keep water and food out - animals who have fled in fear may not find their usual feeding spots. Leaving out food and fresh water helps them recover and find their way back.
🗣️ Speak up in your community - gently, kindly, share what you know. Many people simply have not thought about what firecrackers do to animals. A conversation can change things.
🏥 Report injured animals - if you find an animal that is hurt or in distress, contact your local vet or animal welfare organisation. Do not leave them on the road.
Avurudu is about renewal, togetherness, and gratitude. Let it be that for every creature in your neighbourhood too.
