World Environment Day 2026 | Tree Planting Programme 🌱
In celebration of World Environment Day, the Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum (LRWHF) successfully conducted a community tree-planting programme on 09.06.2026 across Thimbiriyawa, Halmillawewa, Ovita, and Deniya. The event brought together local stakeholders and community members in a shared commitment to environmental conservation.

A total of 24 indigenous trees were planted to enrich the local flora, including:

Mee (5)

Kumbuk (5)

Karanda (10)

Nabada (1)

Helamba (2)

Kathurumurunga (1)

The event was enriched by the active participation of 25 Participants and representatives from the:

Grama Niladhari Office

Divisional Secretariat

Samurdhi Development Programme

Local Community Members

This initiative directly contributes to restoring local ecosystems, enhancing biodiversity, protecting critical watersheds, and supporting sustainable rainwater conservation efforts. By improving groundwater recharge and reducing soil erosion, these trees will play a vital role in strengthening climate resilience for future generations.

Did you know? By harvesting rainwater, we can save the government LKR 23.85 MILLION annually!!

Lanka Rain Water Harvesting Forum Propose a LKR 23.85 MILLION annual saving to the Government On 12th of May 2026. Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum officially handed over the Proposal to Install Rainwater Harvesting System for Public Buildings in Western Province to the Dr. H.M. Susil Ranasinghe, Hon Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply at the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla.

The proposal is to install rainwater harvesting systems in 100 public buildings in the Western Province ,reduce their water bills by 20-30% per building while simultaneously reducing treated water demand from our municipal supply system by 150,000 mΒ³ every year.

The benefits go beyond just savings:

🌍 Climate Adaptation – Reduced storm water flooding in urban areas
🌱 Sustainability – Demonstrating climate action to 28 million annual visitors

We successfully handed over a Professional Weather Station to Weragala Sri Rahula Vidyalaya -Maho, Kurunegala enabling students to monitor real-time weather conditions including rainfall, temperature, wind direction & speed, and air quality (TVOC levels).
