Hand in Hand for Our Planet 🌍🀝🌱

Today, April 22, we celebrate Earth Day β€” a reminder that the power to protect our planet lies within all of us.
This year’s theme, β€œOur Power, Our Planet,” highlights the importance of empowering people and communities to take action for a more sustainable future. At the Green Movement of Sri Lanka (GMSL), this is at the heart of everything we do.

With the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI), and in partnership with the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, we are working closely with communities in the Laggala–Pallegama area to build resilience and strengthen sustainable livelihoods. By improving soil health and promoting traditional, nature-friendly farming practices, we are helping farmers reconnect with their roots. Through the distribution of heirloom seeds and plants, we support biodiversity while enhancing long-term food security.
Empowerment also means sharing knowledge. GMSL has trained six master trainers who now carry this knowledge forward within their own communities, creating lasting impact. By intentionally selecting women as master trainers, we are also challenging traditional gender roles and creating space for women to lead and thrive.
Through this integrated approach, we are placing power where it truly belongs β€” in the hands of communities β€” enabling meaningful, everyday actions that contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future.
Together, we can nurture the earth, support one another, and build a healthier planet for generations to come. πŸŒπŸ’š

Rebuilding Livelihoods: Tourism-Related Support Reaches Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs in Matale District

On 28 and 29 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka distributed essential tourism-related equipment and supplies to small-scale service providers and family businesses across Matale District, as part of our continued efforts to support livelihood recovery among communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

On 28 March, four individuals including homestay operators and those engaged in camping-related tourism activities received the tools and equipment they needed to reopen their doors and resume their livelihoods. On 29 March, in Kahagala, a family-run juice and snack bar received a set of essential items to help keep their business going during one of the most challenging periods they have faced. The business, run with great dedication by two young women, had seen its customer base severely reduced in the wake of the disaster. This support is a small but meaningful step toward helping them rebuild their income and their confidence.

Livelihoods lost to disaster are not just economic losses β€” they are dreams, identities, and futures put on hold. By standing with these entrepreneurs and small business owners, we reaffirm our commitment to inclusive recovery, one that leaves no one behind.

This initiative was carried out under the humanitarian support project, "Support to Provide Urgent Relief for Victims of Cyclone Ditwah in the Raththota and Laggala-Pallegama Areas of the Central Province of Sri Lanka" with the generous support of the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

Every livelihood deserves a chance to recover and thrive. πŸ’š

Nurturing Young Minds: Educational Kits Reach Children Across Matale District

On 27 and 29 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka distributed educational kits to children from Early Childhood Development Centres and a primary school across the Ambanganga Korale, Rattota, Maoya, Dewaladeniya, Hattotaamuna, and Puwakpitiya areas of Matale District, as part of our continued efforts to support education in vulnerable communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

On 27 March, young learners from two ECD Centres in Ambanganga Korale and Rattota were among the first to receive their kits, with smiles that reminded us why this work matters. Two days later, the joy continued as children from seven preschools across Maoya, Dewaladeniya, and Hattotaamuna, and students from a school in Puwakpitiya, received their own sets of learning materials. The school in Puwakpitiya was also gifted with A4 paper and cardboard file covers, small but meaningful additions to help both younger and older students get back to learning without interruption.

Access to basic learning materials plays a vital role in a child's development and sense of stability. By equipping these young learners with the right tools, we take another meaningful step in supporting their educational foundation and nurturing their potential in the wake of disaster.

Water at Last: A Tube Well Opens for the Kiwlawadiya Community

On 27 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka officially opened a tube well in Kiwlawadiya, Matale District, marking a long-overdue milestone for a community that has struggled with limited access to clean water in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.

The tube well was established at the Kiwlawadiya Preschool, an institution that has been serving the community since 2006 yet had operated without a reliable water source for nearly two decades. Today, its 25 children can finally learn in an environment where clean water is no longer out of reach. With this simple but transformative intervention, the school and the wider community now have access to clean water for their daily needs, bringing dignity, safety, and improved living conditions to those who have waited far too long.

Access to clean water is not a privilege β€” it is a fundamental human right. Every child who walks through the doors of that preschool deserves a safe and healthy environment to learn and grow, and every family in the community deserves the dignity of reliable access to water.

Clean water changes everything. πŸ’š

Empowering Livelihoods: Essential Equipment Reaches Kithul Farmers in Rattota and Kiwlawadiya

On 27 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka distributed essential equipment to Kithul farmers across the Rattota and Kiwlawadiya areas of Matale District, as part of our continued efforts to support the livelihoods of vulnerable communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

A total of 17 Kithul farmers received a set of essential work and safety equipment, including raincoats, belts, safety ropes, silver cans, stek knives, and head torch lights, enabling them to carry out their work more safely and effectively as they rebuild their livelihoods in the aftermath of the disaster.

Kithul farming is not only a vital source of income for these families but also a deeply rooted part of their cultural and economic identity. Equipping these farmers with the right tools is an investment in their safety, their dignity, and the resilience of their communities.

Nurturing New Beginnings: Maternal and Infant Care Items Reach Vulnerable Families in Meddawatta, Madakumbura, Kiwlawadiya, and Rattota

Over three consecutive days from 27 to 29 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka distributed essential maternal and infant care items to pregnant mothers and babies across the Meddawatta, Madakumbura, Kiwlawadiya, and Rattota areas of Matale District, as part of our continued efforts to support the most vulnerable communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

A total of 37 beneficiaries, including 12 pregnant mothers and 25 babies, received much-needed care essentials such as bedding, clothing, hygiene kits, baby nets, vacuum flasks, and infant care sets, helping families navigate this precious and critical stage of life with greater comfort and security.

Maternal and infant well-being is at the heart of every thriving community. Ensuring that mothers and their little ones have access to basic care items is a small yet powerful act of compassion, one that nurtures not just health, but hope.

Wearing Dignity: Essential Clothing Reach Vulnerable Families in Madakumbura, Meddawatta, and Rattota

On 27 March 2026, the Green Movement of Sri Lanka distributed essential clothing items to vulnerable families across the Madakumbura, Meddawatta, and Rattota areas of Matale District, as part of our continued efforts to support the most underserved communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

More than 200 individuals β€” men, women, and children β€” received much-needed clothing, including frocks, underskirts, sarongs, t-shirts, towels, bedsheets, and napkins, helping families restore a sense of comfort and normalcy in their daily lives.

Access to basic clothing is more than a material need β€” it is a foundation for dignity, well-being, and resilience. By reaching these families with essential support, we take another meaningful step in standing beside those who need it most.
