The English Speaking Union of Sri Lanka is an independent progressive and dynamic educational charity.

President:Tilak Amerasinghe
President-elect:Nalin Jayasuriya
Vice Presidents:Kamal Muthukuda,Haritha Wijewardena
Immediate Past President, Advisor:Upali Ratnayake
General Secretary: Yasmin Nimaladasa
Honorary Treasurer: Rakbo Perera It was founded in 1981 by the Late Dr. T.P. Amerasinghe (Barrister-at-Law of Gray’s Inn, London and a Doctor Juris-honoris causa). Since then we have been affiliated

with the English Speaking Union International at Dartmouth House, London. During his tenure as Founder President, he introduced the Callen Method of teaching Spoken English in 90 hours which was very popular in the 1980’s and 1990’s. He also conducted English Literature Classes for Advance Level Students during this period. There were also student exchanges with the Head Quarters in London. In the year 2000 under his training and guidance our National Winner Nilakshi Parnidigamage was able to win the International Public Speaking Competition. At present she is working as a Lawyer in the United States. Several of our young people benefitted from the Summer Program at Jesus College, Oxford University which was organized by the Head Quarters at Dartmouth House, London. Unfortunately, it was discontinued in 2012. Since then we have been concentrating on our main aim which is to train young people in the art of public speaking, listening, oracy and promote the value of effective communication around the Globe and help people realize their potential. Three of our students who represented Sri Lanka were able to reach the Grand Final of the International Public Speaking Competition, and two were able to reach the Semi-final stage. (i.e. 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 & 2023). Among them two are final year Law Students, Teaches of Communication Skills, News Presenters and Senior Analytics Associate and some successfully employed overseas. Although we are not very large in size, around 50 Members which grows bigger during the height of activities by offering free Membership to students who participate in our workshops. We have a very energetic Executive Committee which has a fine blend of youth and experience, and they are all voluntary workers working tirelessly to achieve our goals. Our future activities and programs planned are to have workshops on debating followed by a Debating Competition. We also hope to organize a public speaking competition for the South Asian Countries, and organize workshops in Jaffna on Public Speaking for the benefit of students in the North and East of Sri Lanka, as they live far away from the Capital City of Colombo.
